Connection problem
« on: March 10, 2010, 05:43:06 AM »

I have my DNS-323 connected with a wireless router (Zyxel NBG460N). 2 PCs running vista were connected to the router through LAN cables. They are running and accessing the NAS without any problem.
I have a netbook and a HTPC, running win7, which are wirelessly connected to the router, they couldn't get access to the NAS, it was not even showing in 'my computer' or 'network', but it could be found in the LLTD map.
I can get to the admin page through IE, I can ping the ip. All the computers and NAS were under the same workgroup.
I've tried disconnecting the wired PC and used a USB wireless client instead, the vista PC can still get into the NAS without any problem...

Anyone has similar problem? It's the problem of win7 or the network setting issue?

I can connect to the DNS-323 with a wired or wireless Windows 7 machine, so it's not universal.  I have three Windows 7 machines, some XP machines, and two Vista machines.  All have no issues connecting to the DNS-323 or the DNS-321 here.

I'd be checking firewalls on the netbook first...

I agree with gunner... this sounds like a firewall problem.  Are you able to view shares of the 2 wired PCs from your netbook or HTPC?

Could it be a masterbrowser problem?

If you can access the network fine from other PCs, it is not a masterbrowser problem.

Can you FTP to the NAS from the wireless PCs and see the files?

I found that actually i cannot netvigate to the vista computers through the windows 7 wireless computers but can access the other way round... the windows 7 computers cannot connect through LAN cables to reach the other wired PC or NAS neither...

I checked that the vista PCs are master computers... is that a masterbrowser problem as mentioned? how to solve it then?

Actually I can 'see' the NAS under the 'network' tab, but I just couldn't connect to it, I double-clicked the icon but only the setting page popped up(in vista the NAS appeared as a storage device as well as a computer)......

If you'd post the results of running a netstat -n from a command prompt for EVERY computer, we can see if this is a master browser issue.

Sounds like a problem with your router setup. If wired systems can access the DNS323, but wireless systems can't, then it's a router issue. Doesn't sound to me like it has anything to do with a master browser/DNS issue at all.

I typed 'netstat -n' while I loaded the 'network' page...

Vista Wired PC1:
C:\>netstat -n

Sorry, in my haste I asked for the wrong thing.

It's NBTSTAT -n that will give us the correct info.  :-[

Well, that's pretty useless, at least to me. :)

@bintactac:

Try this:
1. Make sure all PCs and devices are set to the same WorkGroup... Also some MediaCenters and routers can also have a Workgroup set.... if they can.. make sure its set to the same as the rest of the PCs

2. turn off all network devices and PCs

3. turn them back on, 1 at a time... start with the router(s)... wait until they are completly booted before booting up an other device.

4. Instead of going from computer to computer... and If you know the IP addresses of the devices... run the following command from 1 of the computers...
nbtstat -A IPAddressOfDevice     ... ie: nbtstat -A 192.168.1.1  (the A must be UPPERCASE)
Run This for EACH device in your network... including Router and the DNS-323

Look for the "Node IPAddress" that starts with 192.168.1.xxx
Between all of your devices only 1 should have a "MSBROWSE" entry

I found that actually i cannot netvigate to the vista computers through the windows 7 wireless computers but can access the other way round... the windows 7 computers cannot connect through LAN cables to reach the other wired PC or NAS neither...

This could be because Vista or 7 does not have "Unpassworded" shares...

I also noticed that if a PC Windows User is not listed in the Users of the DNS-323, it will not appear under "Network" in Windows 7... but you can still access it using its IP address... like  \\193.168.1.30

Also some wireless routers have an option to "isolate" Wireless computers.... making it so that no Wireless connected device can see and other device in the network... they usualy callit "AP Isolation" or something like that...

Make sure its not activated in your router...
