DIR-655 packet drops and errors?
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:13:35 PM »

Hello,
I have been slowly tweaking and adjusting things since I got this router about 4 days ago. I have followed the sticky and am getting the 300mbps. I have read other posts about issues with slow connections and internet drops. Based on those posts I have adjusted my router settings accordingly. My wife and me both play a mmorpg. We have the same model laptop with N wireless. My wife kept getting lag which was never an issue before and was getting disconnected from the game a good bit. The disconnects of course were do to internet drops and not an issue with the game server nor its client. I read one post about packet drops and errors and I'm a bit confused. What does that mean for one and how does it effect our laptops' internet connection.? I downloaded inSSIDer and ran it but being noobish I really didn't know what I was looking at. In the post it said that it could be a problem sharing the same channel. There were 2 other wireless routers in the neighborhood on the same channel. It was on 6 so I switched it to channel 11. My wife got back on the game and said it seemed a little better but still lagging here and there. I checked the wireless status for packet drops and errors and here is what it says. This is from an 8 minute period. Is this good or bad? I'm not sure. I really wish that products worked how they are supposed to. It gives me a headache trying to tweak this and tweak that just to get normal function out of a product. :/

most gamers would probably suggest that you not use wireless to game on unless there is no other way.

You dont mention how fast your ISP service is....or what type of broadband modem you are using.

Also what wireless adapters are you using ?  Some may not like the DIR quite right....

I understand about how it isn't the best to play online with a wireless connections. I have been playing this way though for the past 2 months on a Linksys router but was getting terrible speeds. This is the reason I went with the DIR-655. After doing some research I seen that this was highly recommended though I never read the actual Dlink forum. Wish I did. lol I still like the router and can see the potential. I just want it to be a little more stable. :/

My internet speed is 15 Mb/s I just did a speed test and I'm getting about 25 Mb/s DL and .75 Mb/s UL with 40ms ping.

My broadband modem is a cisco 2100 cable modem.

Our laptops have Atheros AR5B93 Wireless Network Adapters. (also driver is up to date)

I hope that helps. :)

Have you set up the security as free-loaders may hijack your speed and bandwidth. Until I set that up some one was using P2P and throwing me off my router! :o

Another tip: try a wired connection to see if that is better  ??? that will as fast as you can go  :-[

Ya, I set up the security for the router. I was having some problems at first with a free loader but when I changed it to N only then that improved. I will try the wired connection. Though I can't use a wired connection with my laptops for more than just the trial period. lol

Have you done a firmware upgrade? The latest is 1.33NA. You can tell which firmware you have when you log into your router, it will be on the top right.

I had firmware 1.32na when I bought it. It is version a4. I upgraded it to 1.33na and that is when I think everything went wrong. Last night I followed the instructions in the downgrade thread and have downgraded to 1.21na. I also changed the WPA mode from both wpa/wpa2 to wpa2 only. So far it looks better. Let me know if this is still bad or if it is acceptable. This is the status for the last 10 hours.

hmmm.. This is strange. My wife was playing her mmorpg when she got disconnected twice in just a couple minutes. The second time her laptop just didn't want to do anything. After powering off and back on it was fine but what is strange is that the RX Packets Dropped shot up to over 14,000. lol I also was playing the same mmorpg and didn't disconnect at all. She is now on my laptop playing the game and in the last 30 minutes there is zero TX Packets Dropped and two RX Packets Dropped. I don't know what a tx nor rx packet is but it seems nice and low now. So my questions are, 1. What is a tx and rx packet? 2. What is a good number for packet drops? 3. Is it possible for one pc to screw up the internet connection for other pc's connected to the same network?

Thank You Very Much. :)

Ok, I think I may have fixed the problem. Currently I am using version A4 with firmware 1.21na.
I used the recovery feature to put everything back to factory setting and removing anything
that was installed on my wife's laptop. It was a bit overkill but we found out what may be wrong.
After I had her pc back up and running I noticed that there was a driver update for the wireless
network adapter. So I didn't update it. I did numerous speed tests all were consistent. So I reinstalled
my wife's mmorpg and had her give it a good go to see how the connection was. One thing I noticed was that the signal strength stayed at 100% where before it would always change. Second I noticed that even while playing here game online she still had the consistent high internet speeds which was great since before it would go as low as 5mbps. We are supposed to get 15mbps but now it stays between 20 and 25mbps. Excellent. Third thing I noticed was that the packet loss was very low. From what I have discovered on the internet anything below 1% packet loss is great. Now our packet loss is less than .1% for received and less than .01% for sent. Happy with how things are going so far. *knocks on wood, crosses fingers* I went into my device management and downgraded the driver for the wireless network adapter for my laptop as well. Just like my wife's laptop mine is connecting much better to the internet.

My laptop is a Gateway NV53 with Windows 7. The wireless adapter is an Atheros AR5B93.
We are currently using driver version 8.0.0.225 and it works great. : ;)

Thank You to everyone for their help and hopefully I won't need anymore. xD
