Problems with Dlink dir-655
« on: April 07, 2010, 07:47:44 PM »

I just bought a new D link Exteme N router - DIR-655. I installed the CD that came with it and the only settings i have changed is the Networks name and put a WPA2 Key on it.

I have two PS3's the old NON-slim one and a slim one. The slim one is in my upstairs room right above the room where the router is hooked up. i get 100% signal and I checked my speed at speedtest.net on the PS3 and got about 24MBPS download speed which is how much my downstairs computer gets so that is working fine. My laptop which is about couple of years old is getting about 5MBPS download speed.

The problem is that my other PS3 (slim) is in the game room which is right across from my room upstairs. I get up to about 70% signal but the download speed is horrible, cant even download a regular system update, Hell i couldnt even get speedtest.net to load up on it! so i checked with my laptop and im only getting about 0.75 mbps (~750kbps) download speed but my laptop is showing 4 out of 5 bars.

I have positioned the 3 antennas as shown in the Manual also!

Is there anyway i could make it better so i get at least up to 5 - 10MBPS?
I have not checked for a firmware update but i will do that once i get back in town. Other than that, are there any settings in the router itself that i should change to make it better like Port forwarding, DMZ, MAC filtering?
Sorry for the noob questions but im really disappointed in this Router since i just upgraded from a Wireless-B (I KNOW!) Yet I'm still getting the same download speeds!

Btw my internet connection is with Comcast for the 20MB download plan (if that makes any difference?).

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Using port forwarding should improve your network performance with your PS3--it did for mine.  Rather than put all of the details here I would rather just refer you to portforward.com, since they maintain the details of how to achieve proper port forwarding configuration.

Be sure to scroll down to find the DIR-655 and it will give you nearly exact screen captures for the steps that need to be taken.

Keep in mind that you may need to enable/disable SecureSpot for the changes to be saved if you are using 1.3X firmware on your router.

i doubt port forwarding will do anything... i think the walls are interfering with the signal because in my room its running perfectly fine. If a firmware upgrade does not do anything then im thinking about getting a new router.

Can anyone guide me to a ($100-150) router which will get the signal through the walls and to my PS3? my house is about 3200 square feets.

Ok i just updated to the new beta 1.33 and my laptop upstairs in the game room went from 750kbps to 10~12 mbps for download speeds so i found an AMAZING difference updating the firmware! now all i need to do is fix the ps3 problem because im still only getting 200kbps for download speeds but the upload speed is fine!

Will i have to port forward? which ports do i forward?

will DMZ work better? is it really UNSAFE to use DMZ?

Congrats on the performance boost.

If you're using wireless, 200kbps is a good rate.  Be sure to follow the instructions in the sticky to achieve up to 300kbps.

For port forwarding, please refer to my guidance above; I would rather that they keep track of which ports.  I followed the instructions for port forwarding the Playstation Network and the overall Internet performance was boosted substantially.

Haha i think you had mistaken me, when i said 200kbps, i meant that was the download speed i got from speedtest.net, Where as the OLD ps3 in my room gets about 20MBPS. So i should ATLEAST get 10MBPS since thats how much my old laptop gets.

And as for port forwarding, i checked it out but they only have ports for different games, i want the ports so the whole PS3 is fully functional with the download speeds. My upload speeds are fine, its just the download speed that have taken a hit.

My mistake anyway... it should have been 300Mbps   ;)

If you look further at more of the port forwarding settings, you will see that the majority of the settings are the same for the games/applications.  TCP 5223, UDP 5223, 3478, 3479...
