This is a good router and you should upgrade the firmware.

only get this router if your looking for a router that never overheats never crash-reboots and always works as configured.
if your looking for a router that challenges you with complicated menus and impossible to find settings this is for you! (you figure it out after a few hours)
if your looking for a router with a properly layed out setup site that doesnt work half the time, there are lots of routers out there to choose from.

as much as i just got done spending an hour ranting about how hard it is to find what i want in the menu, and that theres no console prompt, i still stand my ground that this router has not failed or struggled a single time in the 2 years ive had it. I often connect to upwards of 1000 computers at the same time downloading and seeding many torrents at a time with 50Mb/s Fios internet (it downloads at almost the speed my hard drive can write the files at)

this router has a massive excess of processing power to do even the most extreme of tasks asked of by a home router.

If you read thru the forums around here you will see a pretty diverse user base....

You would probably get a pretty typical 1/3 1/3 1/3  from the REALLY HAPPY HAPPY to the REALLY HATE IT HATE IT !

Ours has been pretty solid all-inall and I use it as heavy as the typical family home these days.

Were we lucky ? or is it REALLY that good ?

My personal feeling for us is that it is strongly on the good side of life.  But LOTS of people will offer just the painful opposite view.

Its antennas on both the NICs and the router are Vomit inducing (but nevertheless changable)

Id like to shoot the person who designed the website for managment, and the guy who decided to not have a console or terminal services of any kind

I also wouldn't recommend relying on getting any help whatsoever from tech support unless your question is "HOE DOES I SETS UP MUH INNUHWEBZ?" unless you want to find someone new to put on your list also, of the 4 times ive attempted to get help finding a specific thing in the dang website management thing the response has been either "you cant do that" (all of those ones ive been able to do with enough searching around on the site or my favorite you havent provided us with enough information we need to know insert list of entirely unrelated things here.

the device aside from those 3 problems is flawless and will be able to handle a massive connection without trouble (100Mb/s wan speed+)

To sum it all up I REALLY REALLY HATE THIS ROUTER, but
if i had any other router id really really hate it enough to smash it to pieces in less than a day.

im used to cisco business routers, and they have command line or command line and work like they are configured and also work like they are configured. no surprises unless you did something ******ed there.

the diagnostic options has a list much longer than than the 4 letter word ping that the DIR655 has.

Wanna do a line test?
WEVE GOT AN APP FOR THAT ping tells u how long it takes to get there and back (disregard that that has no bearing at all on the quality of the line the configured speed configuration problems or wiring problems as long as its capable of sending 10mb/s on half duplex this router will say PERFECT GUYS THIS WORKS DIR655 satisfied with underachievement!

wanna do a trace route?
WEVE GOT AN APP FOR THAT ping tells u ur destination ip that you typed thats it right there look i traced it from your box to my text output TRACED YAY I DID IT!

wanna check if your internet is workin?
WEVE GOT AN APP FOR THAT ping tells u how long it takes to get there and back!

wanna check if theres a single thing going on right other than the ability to send some data without total failure?
WEVE GOT AN APP FOR THAT ping tells u how long it takes to get there and back! and if you connect 40 computers all together then send **** around on ms networks in massive quantities from a bunch of computers all over the place to see if you can load it up enough ping MIGHT change depending on how important D Link considers ping to be in qos

wanna change a setting?
sure as long as you wanna reboot and wait 3 minutes for the internet to come back up to find out if you fixed anything at all.

on the upside this is the third UPnP port mapping device ive owned
and the only one that has worked so far.

its ok on not updating rich im still runnin 1.1 i think were up to 1.33 or something rediculous like that. mebbe it has traceroute. or mabye they just added more confusing screens to the site. im not gamblin it helpin so im not going to. It does however offer a feature to put a usb hard drive and plug it directly into your router so when someone accesses it ur routers processor gets rickrolled for 4 minutes untill the file is done transferring (routers should not be used for this. they are not disk drive controllers u buffooons. thats 4 the internet. and the network get a network enabled hd they only cost like 4 bucks more and wont rickroll your whole router when u use it.
