Is FW 1.22NA considered stable?
« on: June 11, 2010, 03:18:03 PM »

Hi all, I haven't looked in a while but it appears that the devs aren't doing anything new for the 4500.  So I was just wondering if the general population sees 1.22 as a solid platform.  I'm still rolling with my original 1.14 which seems to be working fine.  I don't think I'll be upgrading as I don't see any features listed I need currently, but I hate the idea of being "afraid" to upgrade.  Thanks...

Yes, it's very stable since v1.15. If 1.14 is working for you then I wouldn't recommend updating. If it works, don't fix it.  ;)

If you are bored one day and would like to try here is the link that takes you from 1.22 back down to  1.15.
Many people have confirmed it does work.

I had 1.22 but had to go back to 1.15 because the only windows based PC running a dlink wireless N adapter has been dropping the wireless connection.  Since going back to 1.15 the connection between the two has been very solid.

You know, everyone is probably going to think I'm nuts, no not furrynuts, but I am still running firmware version 1.02, out of the box 2 1/2 years later.  I have never had a single connectivity issue, dropped TX/RX packets or speed loss.  Kinda goes with, "If it ain't broke...."  The only issue I've had with this thing is memory loss, mine.  Been set up with my security and I misplaced/forgot my password (think immediate and momentary panic mode here).  Running Win 7 Ultimate on one laptop and 1 desktop, Win Vista Ultimate on 1 desktop and Win XP Pro on my work laptop.  Settings recognizes all of my PC's and has never missed a lick.  Anyway, just wanted to drop my thoughts into the mix, and I won't blame anyone for thinking I'm crazy for sticking with what works.

I've done the same, bought this w/ 1.14 around 6 months ago and its been nothing but super fast and no connectivity issues, other than a very very occasional no connection on startup w/ one computer in particular.  I play COD quite a bit wirelessly on PS3, and I can still use bit torrent at the same time and I didn't set up any gaming rules or port forwarding.  I've sometimes considered v1.15 or the latest, but if its just for some very minor updates to settings i don't even need, wtf's the point?

I'm still using my original FW1.0 on my 4500.  I do have wireless issues but it seems like its not worth the hassle to upgrade if I 'Might' have more issues.

If you were up upgrade, I would increment as you can still get all of the released builds from DLink. You could try 1.02 or 1.04. From there, v1.15 is the next best build.  ;)

well, if your not having any issues, then I would take it like this, if it works, don't fix it.  ;)

Ya, I've been running the 1.14 that came on it and have never had any issues.  I've never had the router hang or become un responsive.  its currently been running for 51 days but have had it running quite a bit longer.   As solid as the unit "seems" to be, from reading about so many others having serious problems, I can't help but wonder that if I flash a newer FW, i'll end up with a useless piece of plastic.

Its a very sad trend as of late, and i'm referring to a wide variety of devices, where it seems like updating FW has gone from something that was fun ( almost always worked and you got new features or at least fixes ) to a close your eyes, cross your fingers, possibly sacrifice a chicken and hope things don't get any worse that it was before the update.  I suppose thats the nature of the beat as devices get more and more complicated.  But I hate being afraid to update.  Just out of principle I feel i should update to the latest.  But I don't feel like having to blow a bunch of cash on a new router right now if things go bad.

Again, I would point out that the "if it aint broke don't fix it" mantra, if the FW updates include security fixes, then indeed, it is broke and should be fixed.  just because you haven't actually had a problem with someone attacking it yet, its not a good idea to leave yourself open to an attack.  But you also shouldn't have to be afraid to apply said security fix.

I do agree with that...there are some security fixes that shouldn't be left to the chances of whim. Why is a good idea to do some research on here and ask questions and read the release notes. I know that v1.21 broke more than it fixed. All that was resolved in v1.22. From what i know. DLink won't be coming out with any new FW for a while.   :-X
