Update: After a reset via button on router and manual reconfiguration Email notification now works. Thanks for all the help.
Don't worry, I take lots of backups and am a firm believer in them. I spent 39 years in IT and know their value. My comment about the backup being useless was specifically referring to the instance where you couldn't restore your settings after a firmware upgrade. I think a little extra effort in the design of the backup/recovery process would have resulted in a process to allow at least those settings that could be restored be restored. Even a process to allow a printable file be copied to your PC would have been a great help in re inputting the values. I took pictures of the screens as a means of recording my settings. Thanks again.
