Author Topic: Can I Disable and Enable Wireless with FW 1.22? If Not, What FW Do I Need?  (Read 8164 times)

Year or so ago (when I was running an older firmware) I disabled wireless. I then couldn't enable it again (which is apparently a common bug). I had to reset to factory config to get wireless back.

When I was reading some forums I think someone said a newer firmware didn't have this problem, but I don't know if it's 1.22 (which I subsequently updated to) or a beta. I just spent 30 mins searching for answers with no luck so would appreciate some help.

Can I switch wireless on and off with 1.22 or do I need a beta? If so which one?

Thanks a lot for any help it's very much appreciated.

I guess you read either the wrong manual or missed the wifi configuration part in the firmware setup completely (and the additional help text in the setup screens).

So try looking at http://dlinkrouter/Basic/Wireless.shtml

By the way: No bugs seen in ages for this item.

With all due respect I'm not entirely sure you are addressing the issue I am referencing. What you've said here doesn't really make any sense -- or perhaps I am just misunderstanding you.

So try looking at http://dlinkrouter/Basic/Wireless.shtml

That link does not work.

By the way: No bugs seen in ages for this item.

Really? Here is one from a few months ago: http://www.overclock.net/networking-security/712966-dlink-dir655-wireless-radio-cant-enabled.html

A google search will unearth many other people who have experienced this exact same problem (and many of them quite recently -- although they certainly may be using an old FW).

So, that brings me to my original question: is this problem merely a result of people using an old FW? If so, what version do I need in order to avoid it? Anyone else have any other info? I would very much appreciate some help. Thanks in advance.

You want to disable wireless, right? And you can't find the switch for that? So have a look in the manual where that is done. Or just follow the link. Ofcourse you need to login first...kind of obvious I guess.

And you wil also acknowldge that, after reading that single post, the guy asking the question could be running firmware version 1.01, since he doe not mention it. Current version is 1.34....And since I've been actively doing firmware betas since 1.04 it is safe to trust me when I say that this 'bug' hasn't been around for ages  8)

No. I know how to disable wireless, as I said I have done it before. It's very easy to do.

The issue is that the last time I disabled it there is a bug which prevents it from being switched on again. If you check the box to enable (after disabling) it just cycles and resets and doesn't actually enable it again. Then you have to factory reset to get wireless back.

I am reasonably sure I was running 1.21 (or something way later than 1.04) when I had this problem before. Here are some more people who had the same problem:

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?action=printpage;topic=3585.0 (he was using 1.21 when it happened so it could have been a bug with that version)

1.21 launched december 1st 2008. Quite a while ago, wouldn't you say?

Sure. What's your point? Lots of people prefer to stay with the stable, non-beta FW for a variety of reasons of which I'm sure you are well aware. If I click on update firmware right now it will say I have the latest version (1.22) and that was released in Feb 2009.

Regardless, I thought I was asking a really simple question. Since I had seen numerous messages about this online when I experienced the problem I thought it was a commonly known bug and someone could quickly tell me "oh yeah 1.22 doesn't have that problem" or "oh yeah 1.22 still does that but get the latest beta and it should be fixed." Instead I get brick walled. If you don't know it's okay to say "I don't know" instead of giving me attitude and telling me to read the manual when you clearly didn't take enough time to understand the actual question. I figured it would be quicker to just ask some kind, friendly and helpful people instead of experimenting myself and having to factory reset if they hadn't fixed the bug in 1.22.

1.34 is non-beta firmware which is quite stable. You can get it through the Dlink website and I woud advise you to skip the versions 1.21 (yes, yours) to 1.33 since they all contain some inconsistencies.

Okay ... but I don't know if the issue is even resolved in 1.34. Since I'm still finding messages from people having the same problem (on overclocking sites where you'd think they'd know enough to update firmware ... although maybe not) it concerned me that perhaps the issue remained. For obvious reasons I'd prefer not to have to reset if it hasn't been fixed, and if 1.22 doesn't have the problem I wouldn't even need to update firmware. But it seems I will have to experiment myself if nobody actually knows which version fixed this big (or if ever).

Updating my post (as I hate it when I find posts from people with the same problem as myself and they never bother to say if they figured it out) ...

Switched to 1.34 and I can enable and disable wireless without any of the problems I encountered with previous versions (such as not being able to enable after disabling because the settings don't save after changing).

Encountered some problems when I had to restore my saved config (which had me rocking back and forth singing the "never change a working system" song) but the old unplug and plug back in fix took care of that.
