Dropping Internet - Looking for Help

I just got a DGL-4500 from Newegg.

It worked perfect for a day, then it dropped the internet connection.  I had to repower it.
Worked again for a day then did the same thing.

Before I repowered it, I navigated to Menu -> General and there was blank screen.

I'm getting a new one from Newegg, but wondered if this is a known problem and if there is a fix?

Well, lets see if we can help you out. First of all, we need some information from you.
1. What ISP service do you use? Cable or DSL? If DSL, do you have a modem that has a built in router? Can you provide make and model information?
2. What firmware version is currently loaded on the 4500 router? You can connect to it by typing 192.168.0.1 in a browser and it should display on the 1st page you see after you log in.
3. How are you connecting to the 4500? wired or wireless?

Please review the gaming and game fuel stick in this forum about using the 4500 and setting it up. Yes it's for gaming however those settings work well for general use too. Been using them for years now. Let us know about the info we need to help out.

What did you mean by that. You mean on the router's display? In its Gateway (192.168.0.1)? In your PC?

@ FurryNutz (by the way, that's what I call my cat):

I have a Time Warner Cable Modem.  As far as I know, it is not a router.
I'm at work so I don't have the make and model in front of me.
Firmware is the latest.  I checked that.
Wired and wireless.  On the hard wired PC, there is just no internet.
On the wireless laptop, I can connect to the router, but there is no internet.

Ok on Cable and it probably doesn't have a built in router. As for firmware, the latest you mean v1.23?  Have you done a factory reset and checked the connections after that? You can do a factory reset from the routers web page or the back of the unit with the  button. Have you set up any thing on the router or made any changes? We deal in details so when someone asks about firmware versions or wireless information. Please be specific so we can provide you the best feedback and help we can. Let us know.

Hmm, ok so you mean Device Info > General. Yea, if thats blank, your firmware is probably corrupted. Did this happen after changing some settings or since day 1? If it happened after changing some settings, yea, the basic reset may help. But that just resets the config file, not the actual firmware. To reset that to default, try this:

Taken from DIR-615 C1 - Firmware Upgrade Issue Post

Crash Reset

(1) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds while the router is powered-on;
(2) Continue holding the reset button, unplug the router, and wait 30 seconds;
(3) Continue holding the reset button, plug-in the router, and wait 30 seconds; and
(4) Release the reset button and wait 2 minutes

If that doesn't work I would suggest calling Dlink support and seeing if you have a defective unit. Problems with the display are usually bad news bears.

Thanks to the both of you.  I'll try your solutions if the new one that is coming from New Egg displays the same issues.

Should be here today or tomorrow.

Ok, the new router is installed and I'm having the same problem.  No Internet Connection.

I noticed this time that I was also unable to connect to the router via:

http://192.168.0.1

When I powered down the router and powered it back up, I was able to access the router again and the internet access came back as well.

This time the clock is ticking.  I need to either figure this our or return the router for something different.

Any help will certainly be appreciated!!  FurryNutz and Trikein, please help!

I presume that your wired going from the PC to the router and then to the modem. Shorter cables from the router to the cable modem is preferred. Example, mines a 1 footer. Granted not everyone has this or is actually required.
4. Are you using a specific PC for this set up and if so, can you try a different PC to help narrow down the issue here.

1. The cable modem is an Arris Touchstone Telephony Modem.
2. I thought I was running the latest firmware because when I accessed the router, I clicked on "Check Now" it said I had the latest.  I now have the latest firmware installed: 1.23NA
3. Cabling should not be an issue.  My DIR-655 ran without issue.
4. This computer should also not be an issue.

Now that I have the latest firmware, perhaps the issue will go away.  I guess I'll know in a day or two.

One thing I noticed during the setup.  I could not get internet access if I clicked on "Clone Your PC's MAC Address"

I had to use the MAC address I found in my DIR-655's settings.  This appears to be working.

Perhaps I can get a little education here as to what's going on with this.

Ok let us know how it goes. Reason where asking about FW version is that there was on build of FW that was not great and gave people issues. I would have been nice to know what the version was before you updated so we can identify if you had it or not. Keep this in mind. If the new update seems to work well then let us know.

Also you might want to make sure that the Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses are getting filled in under Basic\Internet\Manual. Sometimes they don't. You can find these addresses under Status\Device Info\WAN section.

I would also recommend you set up the router to hand out static IP addresses to your devices as well. If you do any gaming for PS or Xbox, review the Gaming and Gamefuel sticky.

::dingdingding:: Thats a red flag that there is more to this story. If you didnt get internet access with the default mac address, or your computer's Mac address, then that tells me they have your IP assigned to a certian mac.

1. Who is your ISP?
2. If you connect the modem directly to the PC, and power cycle the modem (need to hold the reset button on the back, Arris have batteries) can you get online?
3. When connected to the router, what is your default gateway? Start > Run > CMD > Ipconfig
4. Do you still have a blank screen on any part of the router's display?
5. Do you remeber any details on the installation of the orginal router? What did you have to do?

Perhaps I can get a little education here as to what's going on with this.

Theres a reason for that... You're only gonna get 1 IP on your connection, so the modem is going to ignore whatever you change the connection to. Thus, the modem will recognize the first device (based on its MAC address) and allow it to receive an IP address and completely ignore anything else you hook up to it.

... So the lesson is this, reset the modem whenever you switch out the connection.

I work for an ISP, and I get calls like this all the time.

Ahh, so Time Warner tries to get a few more bucks by assigning the IP to a Mac? This just reeks of a suit thinking this idea up.

Anyway, yea, unplugging the modem for the length of your IP lease (usually 12-24hrs) will do the job. Or perhaps resetting the modem back to factory.(Usually available on the modems gateway page).

But that still doesn't explain how the router failed on you the first time. And it doesn't explain the intermident connectivity. So I could 3 seperate issues.
