Cannot Authenticate On External FTP Host
« on: October 06, 2010, 06:51:28 AM »

I installed my DIR-655 about a month ago. Since then, I have been unable to authenticate on an external ftp host that I have used for years.  When I remove the router or go outside of my network it works fine.  I am able to make a connection to the host. It will request my credentials.  After I supply username and password, I get a Response of 530 Login incorrect.

I have modified every setting I could fine and reset the router to the factory defaults, but it doesn't help.  Only when I remove the router can I log in.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

---------------

Router: DIR-655
Hardware Version: B1
Firmware Version: 2.00NA (up to date)

Hi basboycjj,

How are you connecting to the Internet, as you have not disclosed? Cable, FIOS, DSL?

Which FTP Server are you talking about?

What modem are you connecting the Router to?

I am in a cynical mood, so let's share that one with the board too: do people think crystal balls actually exist? ;)

Sorry, but it's close to obvious that a bit more info is really necessary to get something close to an answer

I am connecting to ftp.fatcow.com
Cable modem is an Arris TM502G

I'm happy to provide more information, but I don't know what else is really relevant.  I'm not real confident anyone is going to have an answer, but I'm fishing.  I am able to connect to the ftp but can't authenticate and the problem exists only with the router in place.  Just weird.

Hi basboycjj,

Two things to check when you have the problem with the Router in line.

1. - Make sure that the Router is showing your current IP Address from the Cable Modem. If not, Router may not be correctly sync'ed to the Cable Modem.

2. - Make sure that the Router has the correct Date and Time.

I just checked.  Both of these are correct.  Thank you for the thought.

Hi basboycjj,

Since fatcow, is a Paid Web-Hosting site, they may be using a different port then port 21. Find out what port they use and open that port up in the Router's Settings.

Or simply use http://192.168.0.1/Advanced/Web_Filter.shtml

I have verified with them that they do use port 21 and that it is open

Hi basboycjj,

Are you having your Router's Logs being mailed to you?

Make a note of the date and time you try to contact, then Email the logs manually to you and see what the Router may be blocking.

Cleared logs, set to record all types of logging, attempted to log into ftp, authentication failed as has been the case, emailed logs to myself, nothing showing as blocked (just shows that I cleared the logs)

Thank you.

I get the same result with a web brower, ftp client, or command line

Also I can successfully authenticate to other ftp servers

If you can connect through the router to other FTP sites then the problem is with that particular FTP site not the router.

Maybe the FTP server has blocked your IP.
