Loss of wired connection (resolved)
« on: November 22, 2010, 05:21:28 AM »

Hi,

I just got this router as a replacement for a Netgear 624. However, since my purchase I've experienced an occasional loss of connection between the router and the PC wired to it. This never happened with the Netgear router, and nothing else has changed in my setup, which leads me to suspect the DIR-655 is at fault.

Once or twice a day the connection will dissappear, and Windows 7 64bit will tell me there is no internet connection available. This happens during light use, like browsing forums, or even when the PC is idle. Clicking the "repair connection" option in Windows will fix it, as will restarting the router or the PC. Just waiting does not help. I can connect wirelessly to the router and access the internet from another PC while the wired connection is out.

The PC in question connects to the router through the ASUS motherboard's built in NIC, and power saving on the NIC is turned off. The router's firmware version is 1.31EU, which is the latest available for my country (Norway) on DLinks ftp site.

Does anyone have any idea for a simple fix before I return this router on warranty?

Thanks in advance
Dag

Hi Dag,

Look in your ASUS Motherboard User Guide to find proper Power Supply's Watts for the Motherboard.

You might not have the proper Power Supply Size in Watts.

I am facing the same problem and I need to buy a higher Watt Power Supply for my ASUS P5N-D Motherboard. I am currently running 475 Watt Power Supply.

I am replacing it with a 750 Watt Power Supply. I have 3 Hard Drives as well, in the computer. It is Custom-Built Computer.

But even with a 475-Watt Power Supply, I am not losing the Internet.

Since the PC is a Desktop PC, maybe a Tower Computer, check the Ethernet Connection to the motherboard. Make sure that it is fully plugged in.

Also check the Software Firewall. Make sure that someone, did not place the computer on Lockdown.

Thanks for giving this a shot. The setup worked nicely with the Netgear router I had, so I'm having a hard time blaming anything but the DIR-655 and it's settings.

I'm using a Corsair 750w power supply which should be more than adequate considering I'm only running a single graphics card. All cables have been removed and reconnected, and I'm the only one accessing the computer so no lockdown, and no over zealous firewall either.

Troubleshooting this is hard, since it happens rarely and I can't reproduce the problem at will. Log files show no errors, only some blocked access attempts from foreign computers (which are expected on any internet connected computer these days). It's all very strange.

Hi Dag,

Are you having the Router Logs Emailed to you? When others had been trying to hack into my System, I was losing Internet as well as having the Log being Emailed to me about every 3 hours.

Since they stopped or moved away my log is emailed about 9 days apart.

Start Emailing the log to yourself and see what is happening rather than to lose the information.

I use Outlook Express and I save copies of the logs and can review them later.

Seems I have solved this by disabling DHCPv6 on the NIC.

To disable DHCPv6, try Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Centre > Change adapter settings. Right click on the local connection and choose "properties". Remove the tick selecting "Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6)".

After doing this I have not lost my Internet connection for three days - and that's a first with this router! The NIC in question is a Marvell 88E56 based card integrated on an ASUS P6T Deluxe v2 motherboard. Seems it did not play nice with the DIR-655 in my configuration.

Hope this helps others with similar problems  :).

Hi Dag,

Mine is an ASUS P5N-D Motherboard with a NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Onboard. I have no problems. Mine is shown as Enabled, with No Internet Access for IPV6, but Access for IPV4 and I am online.

The Router is the D-Link DIR-655 A3 Version with no Support for IPV6. Firmware is 1.21 with SecureSpot disabled.

This is under Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit Version.

Evidently, the Firmware on yours, may have bugs in it for IPV6.
