DIR-655 DHCP Client not working (not obtaining IP)
« on: May 05, 2008, 04:08:12 PM »

1 week of use.

FW1.11

Now the DIR-655 cannot establish a connection with Comcast cable modem.

Status>WAN>Network Status = just says establishing.....nothing happens.

I've reset router/cable modem. ON/OFF, etc. NOTHING.

Can someon lend a hand?  This router can't be broke after 1 week of use...can it?

If I plug the CAT5 from my PC straight to the Cable Modem...I get Internet just fine.

EDIT:  I just plugged in my old WRT54GL...and DHCP is established fine.

Here are some of things you need to try to solve the problem. First power down the modem for at least five minutes. This is to clear the cache on the modem. Also log into the router and clone the pc mac address under the Internet-Manual configuration. Power up the modem and click on the status page to verify if the router pulled a WAN IP address. Second, if the router did not pull an IP address, please contact your ISP and ask them to Provision the modem.

Please bypass the router and connect the ISP modem directly. Are you getting the private IP address? If you are getting the private IP address, change you WAN type to static and enter those IP address, subnet & gateway and see if you can get online. Also drop the MTU value to see if it helps.

Actually MTU isn't othe problem here. It's WAN port speed negotation.
Try locking the WAN port speed to either 10 or 100 mbps.
MTU would only effect DSL and only be changed with browsing issues.
Not to mention that Tudela clearly states;

"If I plug the CAT5 from my PC straight to the Cable Modem...I get Internet just fine.
EDIT:  I just plugged in my old WRT54GL...and DHCP is established fine."

So obviously the modem is working and the MTU is not the issue.

OK.

For what its worth...I flashed to the BETA firmware and I'm up and running again.

I'm not sure if it was the actual firmware or the flashing process which fixed it.

After doing some more research regarding DHCP, I'm inclined to agree that Lycan's suggestion on the WAN port speeds are what caused the problems to begin with. (i.e. WAN port/speed handshake between the DIR-655 and Comcast cable modem)

Having said that, I going to leave it on auto for now and bump down to 100mbps the next time it happens (if it does).

I realize there's no real-world value on 1000 mbps as I have some odd devices which are only specked at 10/100 anways.

Thanks again for everyone's help!
