Trouble Maximizing DIR-655 Wired Throughput
« on: May 29, 2008, 10:03:58 AM »

I've been struggling to get my DIR-655 to maximize my cable's speed. With my computer plugged directly into the modem, I get 32Mbps down and 5.5Mbps up, which is slightly more than my subscribed rate of 30/5. The DIR-655 maxes out at 11-13Mbps down, 2.1Mbps up, less than half of what I should be getting.

I've tried nearly all possible configurations with this new DIR-655, and I can't get anything above 13Mbps down and 2.1Mbps up(measured from the same site- speedtest.net, from a location hosted by my ISP.) This is over a wired connection using brand new CAT6 cables. I am also using a Netgear ProSafe Gigabit switch in between, but removing it from the loop doesn't change things much.

Here's a rundown of my best config so far:

-All ALG services OFF
-QOS Engine OFF
-Traffic Shaping OFF
-WISH OFF
-SPI ON (this doesn't seem to affect things much either way)
-Manually Specified WAN port as 100MB

I've installed the newest (1.11) firmware.

These changes sped transfer rates up significantly (they were much slower before), but this thing has to be faster.. smallnetbuilder.com rates it as having one of the fastest WAN/LAN (and vice versa) routing speeds around.

Interestingly, the DIR-655's "Auto Uplink"/Shaping feature measures 5.4Mbps (as it should) but I can't get anything close to that..

Any ideas?

Lock the wan port speed to 100.

Lock the wan port speed to 100.

Thanks for your reply.  I've actually done that already; it provided a boost in speed that got me to where I am now..  still only getting 1/2 what I should.   I'm going to reset to factory defaults and start the process over..

Hi,

Is your pc using a 1Gb wired adapter ?  Not that it should matter if your highspeed link is only 30Mbps, which is flyin for ISP speeds....but you already know that part....

You didn't mention who your ISP was and what method they use (DSL or cable)....

After going thru my DIR-655 settings, I didn't see anything that shoudl affect your speed that much as far as the router is concerned, so I would offer the basic concept that there is some basic incompatibility between your modem and your DIR-655 that is creating a significant packet loss (or whatever you wish to call it) such that you are being throttled from 30 Mbps down to 11.

What is your Router's MTU setting at ?  I run 1500, but maybe you need lower like 1400-ish.... ???

What is your PC's RWIN set at (if using XP) you might want to open it up to say 250000 ??  I use Dr.TCP from the DSLReports.com site.....

Just a couple thoughts...

SD1,

Thanks for the reply.
The fact that the DIR-655's uplink measurement feature measured full speed let me know that it was likely a problem somewhere down the line..
My Thinkpad T60p's dock has a replicated eth port that passes through to the onboard Intel gigabit unit.  Turns out that the bandwidth of the dock's system connector is surprisingly limited.  When the ethernet cable is connected directly to the system, I get speeds around 28Mbps down and over 5Mbps up.  (Still not all the way there, but a heck of a lot faster!)

Thanks for the pointer to Dr TCP, useful utility..
