problem after installing Windows Live Messenger 2011
« on: January 30, 2011, 11:54:42 AM »

Hi everybody,

I've got a dlink dir-655 for a couple of months now and never had any problems with it, until now.
I recently installed Windows Live Messenger 2011 on my Windows 7 ultimate x64 system.
Every time I try to login at Live Messenger, the wireless connection falls out. The same thing happens on all the other pc's in my network, where I installed Live Messenger and tried to login. I think that the firewall of the dlink router causes the problem, but i just don't know how to fix it.

Weird thing is that I didn't have these problems with Windows Live Messenger 2010, it all started when I upgraded to the 2011 version.

Anyone knows what to do?

Hi fraggle89,

The date and time on the Router must be accurate.

Have you checked the Firewall on the computer itself?

Enable UPnP : must be checked.

Hey thecreator,

Thanks for your reply!
I checked the date and time on the router and those are ok.
Also the UPnP function has been checked.
The firewall on my computer is Windows Firewall and it doens't block Windows Live Messenger 2011.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough in my first post about the problem: the wireless internet connections falls out for all computers in my network while I try to login on one computer. Sorry for that  ;)..

Hi fraggle89,

Post back with information on all computers and their operating systems.

I have a wired computer with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with Windows Live Messenger 2011 and a Wireless Computer with Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 3 installed.

Do all of your computers, use the same version of WLM?

Try setting up static IP addressing for each computer connected to the router?

What wireless modes are you using? Does it happen with single mode G or N?
Does the wireless stall if you set no security for a test?
Does it happen if you disable the routers firewall?

Hi fraggle89,

I have a wired computer with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with Windows Live Messenger 2011 and a Wireless Computer with Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 3 installed.

Do all of your computers, use the same version of WLM?

I have:
a wireless laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with Windows Live Messenger 2011.
a wireless laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit with Windows Live Messenger 2011.
a wired computer with Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 3 and Windows Live Messenger 2010.

When I try to login on WLM 2011 on the Windows 7 laptops, the complete internet connection falls out on all computers (both wired as wireless). For example: I try to login on WLM 2011 at my windows 7 ultimate laptop, and the internet connection on that laptop, the other laptop and on the Windows XP computer falls out. But when I login on WLM 2010 at my Windows XP computer, I can succesfully login without the internet connection falling out.

In the time I was using WLM 2010 on my Windows 7 ultimate laptop I didn't have these problems. I could also succesfully login without the internet connection falling out.

Try setting up static IP addressing for each computer connected to the router?

What wireless modes are you using? Does it happen with single mode G or N?
Does the wireless stall if you set no security for a test?
Does it happen if you disable the routers firewall?

At the moment I am using mixed mode 802.11 n/g/b.

I didn't try to test it yet with no security. I will try it soon.

I tried to disable the firewall by unchecking 'enable SPI'. After rebooting the router I again tried to login on WLM 2011. And again the internet connection falls out.

Can also try to see if changing the firewall settings to EndPoint Independent for both TCP and UDP when the SPI enabled. Not sure if this will help. Really looks like something in W7 and WLM 2011 is causing an issue here. XP is working.

I would also try setting up a QoS rule possibly to see if that helps any.

I would ask someone on the MS side of things to see if anyone else has seen this issue with other routers. Maybe call DLink and ask for 2nd tier engineer and ask and tell them what your seeing.

Hi fraggle89,

What do you mean that the Internet Connection falls out?

When the Internet Connection falls out, have you tried using Internet Explorer or another browser, to see if the Internet was really out?

The Router firewall should always be on, not off.

Router Security should always be on, not off.

Have you configured Network and Sharing Center on both Laptops to allow file sharing?

And have you configured Windows Live Messenger to allow multiple sign ins for the same account on different computers? If you make any changes, reboot the computer.

I've got pretty much the same problem with my U.S. Robotics Broadband Router Model # 8003

The problem appears while logging in with WLMessenger 2011 or WLMail 2011...
I also connected through a second (my phone provides a wifi hotspot feature and runs a network for mobile phones) network, logged in and then disconnected from the mobile network while still being connected with my usual network. windows live messenger didn't disconnect me but I wasn't able to send messages and receive messages and most important, the network didn't crash this time!

Usually when trying to login the whole LAN / local network crashes, the notification in the windows bar says (windows 7 latest updates) network problem as if there was an IP crash or something... not just with me but also for all members of the network...

as soon as I unplug an replug my routers power cord the network is back up... I'm not really sure whether this is a router or a general network problem which causes every other device in the network to crash network-technically :P

it is a very strange problem indeed and I can't figure out why that happens, hope somebody can help...

the other computer runs windows xp latest updates

Hi thodi,

First thing first. What has a U.S. Robotics Broadband Router Model #8003 have to do with a D-Link Dir-655 Router. You posted on a D-Link Forum for a D-Link DIR-655 Router.

Second: Have you gone through the Options for WLM 2011?

I posted here because I couldn't find the same problem anywhere and my theory actually is that it doesn't have to do anything with the router itself which was proved here and this provides important information for solving the issue of this thread... that's why I wrote here...
I've tried using different options in wlm but it didn't work..

I agree.... and it looks like i've got exactly the same problem as yours...

Hi fraggle89,

What do you mean that the Internet Connection falls out?

When the Internet Connection falls out, have you tried using Internet Explorer or another browser, to see if the Internet was really out?

The Router firewall should always be on, not off.

And have you configured Windows Live Messenger to allow multiple sign ins for the same account on different computers? If you make any changes, reboot the computer.

I can assure you that the complete network crashes. Just like thodi says: you can see it by the notification in the Windows bar. It looks indeed like an IP crash or something. When I reset my router the problem is solved too...for all the users in the network...

And yes, I have file sharing turned on... But I don't think this has anything to do with our problem. Because this wasn't necessary in WLM 2010, so why should it be so in the 2011 version?

It's not so that I'm trying to login with the same account on multiple computers in my network. The Windows 7 ultimate laptop is mine, and the Windows 7 home premium is my brother's... So when I try to login on WLM 2011 the internet connection crashes, but the same thing happens when my brother tries to login with his own account...

I have been searching on other forums and maybe I found a solution ... they were talking about port forwarding ..  but I don't know which ports exactly and whether I have to do this for each user in the network.. anyone an idea?

Hi fraggle89,

I have Windows Live Messenger 2011 installed in Windows 7 Ultimate 64, Wired Computer and on at the same time that I have Windows Live Messenger 2009 installed in Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 3 installed, Wireless Computer. Each computer is signed in to a different Account.

I submit that your copies of Windows are somehow corrupt and you need to reformat and reinstall each operating system. Or that the file system is corrupt and try running both options for Chkdsk, before reformatting and reinstall of the operating system.

Before running Chkdsk, manually clean out your \Temp folders of all sub-folders and files then run Disk Cleanup.

first, thank you for your reply.

I'm really sorry but my window copy is completely fine, genuine and not corrupt at all I'm pretty sure that this not going to solve the problem since other software and especially IM programs run completely normal...

there simply has to be another solution for this...

Also thanks for your reply thecreator.

But I already formatted my pc one week ago (not because of this problem, but just because I usually do this two times a year). Before the formatting I had this problem, and afterwards I still had the same problem.

And I agree with Thodi there has to be another solution (my copy is also genuine and not corrupt).
