  As a parent, I watch (very closely) what our kids do on the internet. I've found that no matter what we do to keep a close eye on the kids, they find a way around my efforts in one way or another. Before I decommission the firewall functions of my DIR-655 for a FreeBSD box, in order to perform true, full content packet capture, can anyone shed some light on setting LAN port or ports as "mirror" or monitor ports? To include traffic comming to/from the wireless interface...

  If I was at work, I'd just put in a probe etc etc...

you can not mirror ports on the 655, however it does come with a securespot 2.0 which has robost parental controls. There is a 30 day trial you can try. Give it a shot and see if that does the trick.

Thanks for the reply.. I'm aware of securespot.. and, you may disagree, but it's kinda like using network magic for me... I may just put in a bsd box and use it as the firewall... unless anyone has any suggestions for a cheap passive probe style connection between my 655 and the cablemodem...

You can try OpenDNS

Put the OpenDNS addresses in your router config and bypass the modem DNS if necessary. You can block the whole bunch (no 100% guarantee ofcourse). Don't know what happens if on a PC there is another DNS config created (will that bypass the routers DNS entry?)

But if you need a 100% coverage and totalitarian control over every byte: go for the BSD box.

My suggestion would be a lot more active --

Kids that can't follow the rules don't get Internet access.  Take the cablemodem with you to work.  You'd get fired if you bypassed your workplace's security -- kids need to learn that "your LAN, your rules" means the same for them.

Yeah, you can always sell the kids if they send/receive a wrong byte. 
Bad comparison, home & work... get some reading material on children and teenagers. They are supposed to break the rules. Just like you did when you were young.

Has anyone TRIED the securespot 2.0? I checked the demo out, "(i know I know, its costs money) but it offers some pretty robust parental controls as well as SMS alerts when "parental controls" are broken or an attempt is made to break them. That in and of itself is awesome in my eyes.

Hi Lycan,

By accident, I did install the firmware that included SecureSpot. But I have no children and no one living with me at this time and I get McAfee Internet Security Suite for Free from Comcast. It works real well. So I am indeed protected, Virus-wise. The McAfee Personal Firewall Plus that is included create logs of everything it blocks and is a real tool, that helps when trying to unblock communication between computers, printers and a Storage Central Unit.

Never, never and never use a Software Firewall that doesn't create logs of what it blocks.

Not me.  I was perfect in every way. 

I've raised my two daughters, I have grandkids now.  Note that I didn't say "fire your kids," but to teach them that breaking rules has consequences FOR THEM -- not just that mom or dad have to work harder on their networking skills.

I've always challenged my son to hack me (without opening the box ofcourse). Even his computer science education did not help him out there . Still pisses him off
