I have the following setup:

DSL modem: DSL-2320B
Router: DIR-655
NAS: DNS-323

Using FW 1.05 I was able to watch video files stored on my DNS-323 without problem (except I had a degraded status for my sync time remaning).  I upgraded to 1.06 FW and the degraded drive issue is now gone.  However, my .avi files will freeze on my PC shortly after beginning to view them (maybe 1-2 minutes).  If I transfer them directly to my computer's local drive, there is absolutely no problem watching them at all, and no freezing.  This clearly seems to be an issue with 1.06 FW

Any ideas??

Just FYI...

The DNS-323 is loaded with two (2) Samsung    SAMSUNG    HD103UJ 1TB  set up in RAID1 configuration.

I have had a similar experience.  When I play a large video file from the DNS-323 with 1.06, the video stops playing.  I experimented further and discovered if I copied any large file (>1GB) from the DNS to my Vista 64-bit desktop it failed.  That is, I got a timeout from the source drive (the 323).

I run 2 500GB Samsung drives in Raid 0.

Now, I’ve been running with this setup for a long time with out a problem when I ran 1.05.  It was only when I upgraded that I saw this issue.  I downgraded from 1.06 to 1.05 and everything is fine.

What gives?

Well, it happens on another PC as well, so I know for sure now that it's not PC related.  I'm using BS Player  http://www.bsplayer.org/ which is an excellent player for any video files.

Is anyone from dlink listening??   Should this be reported via some other method?  I thought that an official Dlink forum would be sufficient, but maybe not.

I think I might know what is happening.

I was just trying to transfer about 1gig of photos to the DNS-323 and it was having problems.  After about a minute or so (sometimes sooner), it would stop transferring and a windows message would come up saying that the network drive was no longer available or could not be found.  Then it occurred to me that most likely this is what is causing my video feed to freeze as well!  Of course since windows in not monitoring data transfer in this mode like it does while file transfers are in progress.   

Hmmm... but what can be done?

Correction: The message that came up said that the path was no longer available.

Well, I downgraded my firmware to v1.05.  My problem of file transfers and video streaming is gone.  However, I know the problem of RAID 1 HD synchronization will rear it's ugly head

In my experience the sequence of events and the messages you mention point to network errors - I do understand that it only happens with fw 1.06 - but I've experienced no such problem with 1.06 - so I have my doubts that it is firmware specific - but I'll take a closer look at it in the morning (it's 11:15 pm here).

In the mean time - can you provide details of the network infrastructure - are you running gigabit ethernet, wireless, etc.

The hardware is listed in my first message above.  I'm running Gigabit, which I thought might be a problem, so I manually dropped the speed down to 100 but no change.  I enable and disabled UPnP, no change either. I'm willing to try anything, but like I said, only moving back to 1.05 was a 100% guarantee of resolving the issue.

I think I am experiencing the same issue but with Firmware 1.03. I am using a media device to stream video to my TV. It seems to be a very interesting issue. I have 2 Dlink DSM-510 media players that stream from my DNS-323 NAS. One DSM-510 is configured for wireless G and the other is wired lan 100Mb. When watching video on the wired DSM-510 I have never had a problem. When I watch Video on the wireless DSM-510, the video freezes sometimes and my whole setup dies. If I restart my DSM-510 media player, then start the video again, it freezes after a short time. Maybe a few minutes at most. I can do this sequence multiple times and the freeze still occurs. However, if I power cycle my DNS-323, then restart my DSM-510 media player it will work again for sometime.

Using 1.06 I have been able to transfer a 1 GB ISO image in a little over a minute and a folder containing 16,000 files, totalling over 3GB, without a hitch - this last folder is a backup which I actually had the need to restore during last week, after the firmware upgrade.

In my case the hardware is an IBM xSeries 206 server with it's onboard 1GB ethernet adapter, a Netgear GS108T switch and the DNS-323.  Jumboframe is enabled and configured for a 9000 byte frame - cables are off the shelf CAT5 no more than eight feet long.

This hardware has been used for two years with only one change - the GS108T switch was added after the upgrade to 1.05 when jumbo frame was added to the firmware - and as I mentioned has been used with every firmware released since 1.02 with no errors.

I have seen errors like you describe - but only when using wireless and then only with a particular intel wireless card that had a high receive error rate, and I could reproduce the error both with and without the DNS-323 being used in the transfer.

Can you provide details on the cables you are using - what category, length and were they purchased or crimped by you?

Also - have you tried the transfer with the DNS-323 directly connected to the PC?  If it works this way the problem would definitely be related to the network infrastructure.

I did a direct DNS-323 connection to the PC as well.  Same issue.  The cables are CAT5e.  Used both externally 10ft and high grade plenum cable max length 15 ft.  External cables I've used were both crimped (by me) and off the shelf. Same problem existed.

For various reasons, a particular FW bug will not necessarily affect all of the installed base in the market. So just because you have seen all iterations of firmware for this model, doesn't mean that you would/will necessarily see any and all existing problems associated with them.  Bottom line for me is that 1.06 does not work.  1.05 does.  But if you have any other ideas, I'm all ears!

What hardware version is your DNS-323 - Rev A or B?

I've been using 1.05 ever since it came out and have been using the same network infastructure.  The only thing changed was going to 1.06.  Then the timeout problem appeared, back to 1.05 and no problem.

I've had my DNS-323 for years and it's worked like a champ!  It's a really neat little device I've talked several friend into purchasing.  My friends runs his DNS-323 with 1.06 and has no problems.

I don't know, maybe my hardware is old and 1.06 has a problem working with it.  I'd really like to run 1.06 to take advantage of the 1.5TB support and the fixes.

You may want to see if there are updated drivers for your NIC and see if that makes any difference. If you are using Jumbo frames try it disabled on the NIC and DNS-323. 

Have you tried streaming the video to WMP11 as opposed to bsplayer?
