Author Topic: Trying to use 323 as storage for Bandwidth Logs on Tomato Firmware  (Read 7836 times)

Ok so I have the DNS-323 with 1.06 loaded on it. 2 1.5TB Seagate Barracudas in RAID 1 Config.
and I have a Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato v1.21.1515 loaded onto it.

I'm trying to use the storage on the 323 as the storage for the bandwidth monitoring logs since the storage on the router itself is really limited. I used to store them in a directory on my file server (windows xp pro sp2)...but I seemed to have issues with the router losing months worth of data. I believe that's due to the router losing the connection to the file server occasionally and not being able to save to the share (yeah I do use it for more than just file serving, so I do reboot occasionally thus the reason I got the 323). Since I'm on Comcast (250GB cap) monitoring bandwidth and knowing how much I'm using is important.

Now for the problem: I get error messages on the Router when I try to mount a CIFS share on the 323. I have it setup with a separate login on the 323 that has read/write access to a share named "Router_Bandwidth". When I try mounting the CIFS share though I get the following error message:
Code: [Select]
<11>kernel:  cifs vfs: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -1
When I try to have it login using the same login I use for my gaming pc, it throws the same error but with code "-22". That user has access to the entire contents of my 323 so the path on the 323 is "Volume_1\Backups\Router_Bandwidth".

Yes these are errors gathered from the Router through Wallwatcher (receives the logs from my router).

I realize this isn't really the best place to post this since this issue seems to primarily be with the Router and the Tomato firmware. I'm just hoping to find someone who might have experience with this and the 323. When I do find the best place to post a thread in a Tomato forum I will (unless someone here gets the fix to me first).

Just to be clear on who you're dealing with here...I'm primarily a Windows user. I have very little experience with Linux besides the 323, installing Tomato on my WRT54GL...and occasionally messing with some of the more user friendly Linux distros out there (Mandriva and Ubuntu primarily) (so yeah...basically nothing). So if you got some commands you suggest I should run...tell me how to do it please (ie connect via ssh move to directory X run this command). I don't mind digging into software and hardware...if I need to I will.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Yeah, it's been this way as long as I've owned the DNS-323; I've never been able to get the Tomato CIFS client to mount a share on it.

aww shucks :(

in addition in my own searching I found this on the error message with Tomato:
http://brandan.thelloyds.net/2008/01/19/tomato/comment-page-1/

but I can't find the smb.conf he talks about on my Router.

edit: ever give DD-WRT a try with the 323 or any other firmware that has bandwidth monitoring?

The smb.conf he's talking about is the one on the DNS-323, that we have no way of accessing, short of fun_plug or whatever it takes to telnet into this thing and access the file structure.  Or D-Link could upgrade the version of Samba server it uses...

So, read this page here, specifically the part about "How to Make the DNS-323 Work with UNC Paths."  That'll take care of our problem, but I don't really feel like experimenting with an, otherwise, decently-working NAS.

Yeah I guess that would make more sense since it's the one hosting the samba share. Duh.

I found the page you're talking about on the wiki...did you just forget the link or did it get removed since that stuff isn't supported (and I believe will void the warranty, thus it's a no no to talk about it)?

I have a second WRT54GL on the way that I'm going to experiment with a bit before going down the fun_plug route. I think I may load up DD-WRT on it to see if it works any better (though I'm almost certain it won't since the fix for it is supposedly done on the 323, it's worth a try though before I potentially mess up my 323).

edit: oh wow...read through that page a bit more...a lot easier than I thought...working perfectly now
ok here's a question regarding the save/load configuration way...is that something that will stay over a reboot or a power failure, or will I need to apply the config file every time I bootup the 323?
