Scheduled Download application
« on: February 21, 2011, 12:23:16 PM »

I now have two DNS-323 units, the new unit is for testing and to act as a backup to the first unit.

I am trying to create a Scheduled Backup on the primary system(dlink-nas1) to send folders to dlink-test.  Both units are running FW 1.09.  In the process of creating a schedule, I test the URL I entered I receive the message "Test result: Failure  Please verify the URL, DNS settings and your settings."  The value I entered for URL was http://dlink-test/Volume_2/user_name/directory.  The user and directory already exist on the unit.

Is there any documentation on how to use this application?  I could do this with a script, but I thought a DNS to DNS transfer would be more efficient and good to learn.
 Thanks

It looks like the URL expects the backslash "\" not the unix forward slash "/".  I may also be scheduling the job on the wrong machine.  Documentation would still be helpful.

Why are you specifying hypertext transfer protocol in the URL?  Try \\server-ip\folder and see what happens.

I'm doing something similar, trying to create backups from various PCs on my network to the DLINK-323. I'm using \\STUDY-MAIN\folder\sub folder\ where "STUDY-MAIN" is the name of the PC on the network.

I'm getting the same error message as lookingforinfo "Test result: Failure  Please verify the URL, DNS settings and your settings"

The 323 is running 1.08 firmware, hardware C1. The network has McAfee Net Protect on it, but I've configured the 323's IP address as a trusted "home" address.

I'm a brand new user on this, so thanks in advance for any basic help to get this working.

(I've also tried setting up backups via the bundled Total Recovery Pro but a. I can't activate it (error 12029) and b. it asks for network logon details and I'm not sure what it's after; I don't have login details for the STUDY-MAIN PC and I've tried the admin login for the 323 without success)

Fordem,

At the time I was trying anything and everything I had seen in a post.  \\server-ip\folder does work.  It also works better when I schedule the task on my secondary server and enter the \\server-ip\folder of my primary server as the source machine.

Thank you for your many helpful comments, especially about RAID 1.

nikhalton,

fordem's suggestion is correct.  You need the enter the IP address of the machine you wish to backup.  Obviously, the machines will need to have static IP addresses. In my environment I do not have to contend with security software so I can't comment on that.

thanks lookingforinfo

I just tried IP address, by coincidence. Using the local network I went with http://192.168.1.xx/folder/sub folder/ and still get the same error.

I asked this question earlier in the thread and now I'll ask it again - why are you specifying hyper text transfer protocol - you're telling the DNS-323 to connect to an http server, which probably does not exist at the address you're specifying.

If as I suspect, you're trying to connect to a Windows share - you need to use SMB notation - \\192.168.1.xx\folder\sub folder\file name.

Before I sent my first message, I was trying anything and everything I had seen posted by someone else.
Yes, including HTTP: was stupid.  Since I was trying to go between two different DNS-323 units, I had tried //192.168.1.xx/folder/sub folder to move an entire directory between the units and it would not pass the test.  I user "/" because the boxes are unix based.  Again I was wrong by not thinking the files are SMB.  All of this is helpful.  Documentation, either on the screen or in the User's Guide, would have made all this unnecessary.  I have made progress with the help of you and others.  I hope this may help others.

I'm still getting the same error with SMB \\192.168.1.69\Documents and Settings\Nik\My Documents.

The IP is taken from my router's allocation table (initially DHCP but I've set this as static for this CP) and the folder path is taken straight out of windows explorer to avoid typos.

lookingforinfo - the first time I asked, it was meant for you - and I think you got where I was coming from, the second time I asked, it was meant for nikhalton, because, hopefully, he would have read through the thread and learned from your mistake.

Ah well...

nikhalton - I have two questions for you ...

First - are you entering SMB \\192.168.1.69\Documents and Settings\Nik\My Documents as the URL?  It won't work you need to enter  \\192.168.1.69\Documents and Settings\Nik\My Documents\

Second - have you created a user/password pair on the Windows system with access to the folder and entered those credentials on the DNS-323?

fordem, I had read through the thread, I'd just allowed myself to get confused in something lookingforinfo posted. My bad.

I have entered \\192.168.1.69\Documents and Settings\Nik\My Documents\ (your second, green option) in the URL field.

I haven't created a user/password pair on the windows system. The folder is an open share on the network and the PC has no login details. It's logged in as admin by default.

If you may not have created a user/password pair on the Windows system and entered that your DNS-323, you'll probably need to do so now - ALL recent versions of Windows require at least one user, and the administrator & guest accounts are created by default.

To further complicate matters, if there is only one active user, Windows will usually not prompt for a user or password, even if a password is required, and the end result is often that the user forgets the password after a while.

You could try entering administrator as the user on the DNS-323 and leave the password blank.

For the record - running Windows as the administrator with no password has serious security implications and should be avoided.

To everyone, and especially to fordem, I would like to apologize for the way I expressed myself yesterday.  I need to wait a longer period before I reply.

In the hopes of maybe helping others, I have found the online documentation for the Scheduled Download application.  It is located under the Support option.

Peace

Thanks for your patience and continued help, fordem. Unfortunately as soon as I put a username in the box, the DNS-323 demands a password, so that option doesn't work.

I have another backup utility that I can use, but it runs from one of my desktop PCs, which is a minor inconvenience.I'd love to know what's wrong with Total Recovery Pro and the Farstone.com website...

One of my other PCs has Windows login accounts active (since it's used by the kids), I'll try setting up a scheduled download on that and see how it goes.

Thanks again.
