WAN Interface Is Down
« on: January 15, 2009, 07:51:16 AM »

I know this is another disconnection problem.  I've seen and read most of the discussions surrounding this topic but I hope that some patient members can still help me with my connection issue.  I'm no expert in networking products but I do realize that an effective way of fixing issues is to eliminate possible causes until you isolate the real problem.  I have three D-Link products (DIR-655, DNS-323 and DAP-1522) and am quite happy using them with my wired PC, my laptop and PS3.

Two weeks ago the wireless disconnection problem started appearing (in my laptop) so I decided to connect it directly to my modem at first then to the router (so I can check whether it's a problem with my DSL modem or a problem with the router itself).  So far, no disconnection issues appeared until today when I saw (though briefly) the pop-up message in my system tray saying "LAN disconnected".  I managed to capture a portion of my router logs:

I hope someone can translate the logs and tell me if the problem is with my router configuration or with my DSL provider.  I highlighted five interesting logs which I also don't understand.  I use Network Magic (with Channel Lock) in my computers so I presume one of the log entries has something to do with it.  My configuration:

A3 ver 1.11SH
WPA TKIP
Mixed mode G and N
Auto Channel Scan
Transmission rate automatic
Channel width auto 20/40
UPnP disabled
QOS and WISH enabled
WLAN Partition enabled

Interestingly, my router time has been acting up for quite some time now so I decided to enable auto time configuration using Dlink's NTP server.

Appreciate your help in advance.

How is your internet$ modem configured? Does it also run DHCP?

Sorry, wasn't able to respond immediately.  Re your question EddieZ, my DSL modem has a DHCP configuration.  It's actually an ADSL modem so it's a PPPoE connection.

I noticed several new threads on disconnections were also raised.  I can relate with some of the posters, particularly those whose units were working great until recently when the disconnections started happening.  Mine worked very well initially and performed many of the things I wanted for my network - file sharing, wireless streaming from NAS to PS3, etc (really happy with it actually).  So it's disheartening to see that even without doing anything (or changing any of the settings) these disconnection began appearing.  I think that's one of the reasons why some posters are frustrated:  since they are not experts, most of their free time (especially those who work) are now spent trying to fix these problems.  What could be causing these disconnections?  Is it a common problem for all?  And interestingly, why have they started appearing only now?

After trying many of the suggestions in other threads (and still getting the wireless and wired disconnection errors), I finally decided to do a hard reset today.  Except for the SSID, I did not do any changes, so there's no security setting, etc.  Hooked up my router to my modem then to my computer (wired connection).  Guess what, the disconnections still appeared and more frequently this time.

D-Link, we really need your help on this.  We're running out of options (and patience)...

Sherlock,

Call your service provider and have them bridge your modem. Also you may need to lock your WAN port speed down on your router rather than have it set to auto.

Thanks, will call my ISP and try to bridge my modem.  At what speed should I set my WAN ports?

That depends on the modem. This is usually 100, but 10 is also possible. Start with 10, if that goes well and the error goes away, try 100. Other way around is also possible, but you wnat to check first if your initial proble goes away.

If you run DHCP on both the modem and the router, they might conflict. General rule is to avoid double DHCP in one network (unless your know what you're doing).
