email being intercepted

I run a mailserver behind my router. I have port 25 forwarded as a virtual server. Not always, but often enough to be annoying, the connections show as being from the WAN port on the router instead of from the real origin. Is there any way to stop the DIR-655 from doing this?

Try setting SPI firewall to Endpoint Independent.
How are the connected devices to the router set up for IP addressing? Auto Obtain?
Try setting up DHCP reserved IP addressing on the router for your devices.

DHCP reserved addressing was already in place; I've changed it to Endpoint Independent. Lets see how that goes. fwiw, when I think about it, I had my last router set to Endpoint Independent as well, although I don't remember why.

No luck; logs show some email still coming from the WAN port :(

Could you explain? Where are you seeing this? When ports are fowarded they are forwarded from the WAN port, or atleast the public IP given to the router by the modem, to the private IP inside your LAN. Also, who is your ISP? Most are going to block 25.

My ISP is Optimum Online and I have their Boost service which allows me to run mail and web servers. I am seeing my public IP appear in my mail logs occasionally....

Make sure that your Internet service is truly not blocking the email port of 25.  I have seen some ISP mis-represent the service is not blocking the email ports.

I am not missing any mail; the problem is that occasionally the connection appears to be from my WAN IP address instead of the real IP of the sender, with no consistency that I can find. This, of course, confuses spamassassin.

I should also state that this has been working for some 10 years and this problem only started when I replaced my DGL-4100 with the DIR-655.

I've removed it from the Virtual Server settings and applied it under Port Forwarding instead. Fingers crossed that port  forwarding really means just that......

Sadly, it did not work. I fear I may have to consider replacing the router, as it plays havoc with my spam-filtering.
