Running at less than 1Mbps?!
« on: May 22, 2011, 11:11:29 AM »

I tried everything. But my wireless set up does not work. At all.
I have a DIR-655 (obviously) linked to a DWA-130. I tried multiple
configurations but STILL only get less than 1Mbps download speed.
Can someone please just tell me what to do? hahaha
Let me know what you need. Thanks in advance.

Hi Lluminari,

Paint a picture in words of your Home Network, plus information on the ISProvider and your speed to the Internet. If you can't do that, suggest you pay for a Tech to come to your home and fix it.

Well, I did the first link and my PS3 wouldn't connect, switched back to compatible with g/n's.
The router is in the basement, I'm only one floor up.
I've reset the router yesterday and did my settings again. Still, 1Mbps...if that.
Run various scans, tried different browsers (FF, IE) and still nothing over 1Mbps.
I have Avira, SUPERantispyware, MS security essentials installed.
There is only 5 things connected to my router, but this shouldn't effect the speed: 2 PS3's, XBOX360 and 2 PC's. Nothing else is allowed on my router as I blocked outside traffic with a 64bit password (changed each month).
Before, my connection to the internet has been 20+Mbps...so you can see my confusion as it went down dramatically.
Should I just reinstall Windows?

Hi Lluminari,

What is the Hardware Revision of the Router? Firmware?
What operating system? Service Pack Level?
What Router was being used, when you connected at 20+Mbps?

DIR-655, Hardware Version #: A4, Firmware: 1.34NA
My computer connects to the router using a DWA-130 rev.b, 2.00 driver.
Windows 7 64-bit, Service Pack 1.
Still using the same router since first install. Pretty much the first time it's giving me such weird throttling.

Router settings:

Wireless Radio : Enabled

802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b (Has to be this mode to communicate with PS3's)

Channel Width : 40MHz

Channel : 10

Secondary Channel : 6

WISH : Active

Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Configured

Hi Lluminari,

Do a Factory Reset using the Recess Button in the Back of the Router, while Power is applied for a period of 20 to 30 seconds and released the button.

Reenter all information and run it for awhile and see what happens.

Something in the Router may be corrupt and a Factory Reset would clear it up. If you saved the settings, when you first entered them, you can restore the file.

But don't save the file now, if the information is corrupt, then you could be restoring the corruption after the reset and the Factory Reset is wasted.

Not sure if you already said this, but what is the wireless signal strength to the PC in question? Also, what speed do the other computers connect at? Also 1Mbps? Last, where are you seeing this 1Mbps? Connection rate or some sort of test?

My own connection to the router is a solid 300Mbps. There is no problem there. My internet seems throttled though. All the time.
I have done a reset on the router. But to no avail.
There is another PC hooked up to the router. He is running just fine, no lag at all.
I'm wondering if it's his PC that's doing it. Is his connection throttling mine?!
He's running Win7 64-bit. I can get on there.
Is there a way to change the settings on the router to limit him, or do I have to jump on his PC to do something?
I saw the 1Mbps running a bandwidth test on speedtest.net. Tests I've done in the future would have me at 18-20Mbps.

When your doing this speed test, you are connecting wired to the router correct?
If your trying to test via wireless, you will not see the same results and wired and is always preferred to speed test over a wired connection.

There are too many variables over wireless to get accurate speed results and is just the nature of the beast.

Hi Lluminari,

Have you done 3 tests on a row, to see if it is the same or different?

I am confused. You never mentioned that you had 300 Mbps connection to your Router.

Are all the computers going through your Router, your own?

Whose computer is wired to the Router?

The Internet Speed is governed by the ISProvider and your Modem, not by the Router.

If one computer is downloading a large file, then it will slow down your speed as well.

If your ISProvider is a Cable Company, and other people on the same feed as yours, will affect your speed as well.

Who is your ISProvider? How are you connected to the Internet? Dial-up, DSL, Cable, or Fios?

@FurryNutz No, my tests used to be wireless. I would get about 18-20Mbps DL, 1Mbps UL. Which I thought was pretty impressive. For a wired test, I would need to physically bring my computer downstairs. I've never seen issues like this before. I don't UL or Dl anything and nothing is being updated.

@thecreator I've done a few tests in a row. All about the same, no tests jump over 2Mbps.
The connection to the router is solid. It used to be at about 150, but then followed the guide posted in the sticky to enhance that to 300Mbps.

My friend's computer runs through it, but he just plays games from Steam on there, no biggie. I make sure he constantly runs scans and takes care of his system. I installed the necessary precautions so he can browse the web, worry free, without anything jumping on his system. Besides that, there are 2 PS3's and an XBOX that hooks up to it. I make sure not all 5 are on at once. Although, 2 PS3s and 2 PCs on at the same time are not an issue. My friend and I would play Borderlands while Skyping instead of using Bluetooth to talk (The PS3 is kind of bad for playing games and using Bluetooth).

His computer is wired, mine's wireless.

Our provider is Shaw. It runs through cable.

I'm going to go see if his system is effecting anything. He might have picked up a bug.

Hi Lluminari,

Temporarily disconnect his computer from the Router and run the Speed tests again.

If the results are the same, then his computer is not guilty of your problems.

Before I would reformat and reinstall your operating system, I would manually use Explore and clean out all the \Temp folders of files and sub-folders. Then run Disk Cleanup.

I would also download and install TuneUp Utilities 2011 from http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/ . Install it and run it. It is a 15-day Trial Copy, but fully functional. Run the Registry Cleaner.

See what happens. It may save you from a reformat and reinstall. Also install SpyBot Search and Destroy in passive mode, not protecting you and see if it finds anything.

Hey thecreator.

I tried everything and in frustration I reinstalled Windows 7 and still found my connection to be lacking.
I appreciate your help, but nothing has worked so far.
I even tried to look into setting up the speed in both our registries, but I can't with this version of Win7.
I need to split our bandwidth so he has 10mbps and I have 10mbps. Instead of me getting the short end of the stick.
If someone can explain to me, in english, how to manipulate the bandwidth using the QoS, that would be much appreciated. I go over the help section time and again and it just looks like jibberish to me.
Thank you in advance.
