I am pretty new to networking and I have been working on things for over a week and have made some progress which has lead me here. My basic problem is that my network (media shares) is disconnecting from WDTVLIVE while steaming shows through playon. However, I can stream 1080p movies that are stored on my PC all day with no problems. Even when the media shares disconnect, network shares (stuff stores on my PC_) are still available and stream fine.
Here is my current setup:
I have my main computer – the one with playon – hooked up to the router via a wired connection. The wd is also hooked up to the router via wired connection. I have two other computers hooked up wirelessly, but these are old computers and are only used for a few minutes a day – if that. They are connected mostly for printer sharing and internet connectivity when needed (rarely).
I have a 12mbps cable internet connection and I have confirmed my speed at 12+ consistently. Playon tech support has had me do a number of diagnostic tests and yesterday they confirmed that I am only getting a stream of 3.5 mbps and that is the problem for the drops. I have completely disabled firewall and avast and still have problems, so playon says the next most likely place is the router.
I initially hooked up the router as per the manual and everything seemed to be working. I can download fast (12+mbps) and my WD can see media shares so I thought it was all good. Is there somewhere I should start with the router or some outside test to narrow the issue down?
thanks and sorry for my ignorance.
