Added to the firmware wishlist...
Great, thanks. Wasn't sure if it qualified for inclusion or not.
The factory reset procedure should already reset all user configurations.
The word "Should" is a dangerous word.
http://uplink.to/le6I had thought so but such is not the case. Or, as always possible, I did it wrong. I'm going to be doing it again to make sure. Sadly it's many hours between attempts. (For some reason the damn mortgage company is in cahoots with my wife and they want me to actually go to work every day.)
I took the drives out and wiped them using my server at work. Wrote zeros across the entire 500G of each one. We're talking no signs of life at all on them when they're finished.
I then, without the drives installed, powered up the unit and did the reset thing. Then powered it down and inserted my cleaned drives. There was still information in the system that shouldn't have been there.
I'll post a followup when I've rewiped the drives and done it again.
It's impossible for the box to truly purged since the latest installed firmware will remain.
Yes, that's right. Sorry, I probably gave the wrong impression to those who were reading.
When "Purged", I expect the system to little more than just the firmware on it and the date it was loaded. There has to be some residue expected (number of hours run, last run, etc.) but that's all.
As an aside, if anyone can reach the powers that be, the firmware downloads are sorta screwed up on the main site. The link
http://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DNS-325 lets you select which firmware to download and it uses names like "DNS-325_FIRMWARE_1.01.ZIP" but they're
not in zip format, they're raw lif (binary) files. It
is smart to provide them in zip format but someone's got to fix the files on the website to correct them.
Also, one of the firmware files is damaged somehow, I've tried a hundred different ways to test it and the 1.01 file won't work. I attempted to return my system to original status so that I could experiment with it and do the upgrades slowly instead of jumping to where I was (at 1.04) but ran into those problems.
Like I said, I probably shouldn't have put this here but in a related topic, it's more informational and feedback as opposed to actual wishlist entries.
Thanks for everyone's time.
