Can't update firmware
« on: October 03, 2011, 10:42:04 AM »

I just bought my DIR-825 from Frys and it came stock with 2.02NA B1 firmware, but everytime I try to update it to 2.03/2.04/2.05/2.06 it errors saying it might not be the same hardware or something on the lines of that.

But now when I try to upload it, it just leads me to "192.168.0.1 was interrupted" and can't even get to the error screen now.

I'm not too savvy when it comes to routers, especially a D-Link since previously I had a Linksys WRT54GL, so if anyone could help me with it, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Is there reason your updating?

This unit should work great out of the box.

Did you unpack the .bin file from the zip file you got from the web site?
What browser are you using to access the routers web page?

I've heard mixed reviews about 2.02, upon reading. While also hearing 2.05, specifically, is a lot more consistent. I've only tested it for a few hours, so I can't say my connection has constantly been dropping, but who knows.

I'm on Lion OS, using google chrome and mozilla firefox.

Is 2.02 compared to .05/.06 a big difference? Or should I update my firmware to the latest, always(aside from skipping .03, cause I've only heard bad reviews on it)?

This is the exact error im getting.

"The uploaded firmware file may not be correct. You may have uploaded a file that is not intended for this Gateway, or the uploaded file may be corrupted.

If the uploaded file is correct, it is possible that the gateway may be too busy to properly receive it right now. In this case, please try the upload again. It is also possible that you are logged in as a "user" instead of an "admin" - only administrators can upload new firmware.

The Gateway will not be reprogrammed."

I downloaded them off of the d-link support website, and even downloaded 2.06 off of the 'check now' 'download' option under tools >> firmware... still doesnt work.

I'm also on OSX 10.7 and a MPB. I have my 825 on single N at 5Ghz and single G on 2.4Ghz to handle the other stuff. Must say this router works great.

I would really give the router a chance. Do some wired testing with speedtest.net and see how it compares to what your pay for.

Can I ask what you pay for Up and Down for internet?

I usually go by this, if it works, don't fix it. Most FW updates are for minor issues behind the scenes and you don't see any UI fixes persae. Other things bring in some new features that people are just dying for, like IPv6 however in general, IPv6 is still being devloped and implemented at the web, backbone and ISP levels. Home end users wont see much of it still for a while longer. IPv4 isn't going away either just because IPv6 is the next thing.

I would play with it for a while. If you notice anything or odd behavior then, lets trouble shoot the problem and then if we can't help you find the cause, update FW by all means man.

Some tips that I use:
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off ALL wired and wireless QoS options if you don't game any.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G on 2.4Ghz for your devices that don't support N or 5Ghz. Try single mode G at 5Ghz for those devices that do support N and 5Ghz.

What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

I'm currently on contract with Timewarner for 10down/.5-1up for 39.99. However using speedtest.net I'm only getting 3..68down/1up.

I have Timewarner Cable.
It's a stand-alone, make is Cisco, model is '2100 Cable Modem'

I did a few tests with 2.4 and 5, and I found that 2.4 seems to provide better wireless for my 2011MBP.
I'm on WPA-Personal at the moment.
I only have my laptop, and my phone connected to it currently.
No cordless phones.
I live in an apartment structure, so theres a good 10+ routers in my area.

I'm not too fond with router configurations, so it's hard for me to gauge everything you said about 'Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?' all the way to 'Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.' I understand I probably won't get the 10 I pay for via wireless, but I was hoping id get closer to 6-8 with how much I pay.

I've read forums and forums about different firmware providing better/worse wireless, and I don't know what to believe now. I'd like to be able to test 2.06 to see if my router runs on it better, cause 3mb is just way too little for 40$ a month.

I also don't know if this is what you meant by
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?

but the addresses in 'Primary DNS Server' and 'Secondary' DNS Server are 0.0.0.0.

and also, how would i setup these devices to auto-obtain IP addresses? if it's not already.

[I truly thank you, this is my first d-link router, and I really only know my way around Linksys routers, haha]

Head over to the Status/Device Info/WAN section on the router. Here you'll see what the router is getting from the ISP modem. Here you'll see the primary and 2ndary DNS addresses. Copy these addresses from here and paste them in to the Setup/Internet/Manual section.

Let us know, maybe someone can remote in and review your router settings with you using teamviewer.com. It's free and very safe.

Alrighty, thank you very much! I hope this will all work out... If not, I think I'll try the teamviewer program.

Would you, by any chance, recommend updating the firmware straight-out-of-the-box? Or just keep 2.02?

I recommend using it out of the box. Really no need for updating at the moment. Lets make sure the router is working well for you as is.

Most of the FW revs are dealing with IPv6 and a few minor UI issues. Nothing that would cause and update unless your heaving into IPv6 and using it right now.

2.02 is buggy. i had stability issues with it when accessing the router config & trying to make settings stick.

2.06na requires that you first update your router to 2.05na. 205na is a 2-part update. you must do part 1 then part 2, then 2.06na will stick.

i had some difficulty at first because i didn't know this, but then i read the info on the download page and tried it again. i also had some difficulty initially connecting to the router via wire. waited a little while after connecting, then the connection allowed internet access. then i was able to do the update.

also, be sure you jack into port 1, this is the port you need to use between the computer and router to upload the firmware.

were the buggy issues affecting your wireless connection?

what's the 2-part process for 2.05? if it's no hassle to ask, cause I'd like to see if it runs a lot smoother and more consistent, if not, then I'll just flash back or something.

Well so far, it's connection is constant enough to stream 1080p+ videos 60-70% of the time with no pausing...but that's not necessarily good for me since I would prefer it work a lot better...

Streaming 1080p and HD video files over wireless is going to be some what iffy on any router using any FW verson man. I have a boxee box that only support 2.4Ghz on N mode only and streaming from my wired Windows 7 server that has BD files on it doesn't work well. DVD files are ok. Just BD files since they data is so huge, it just wont fit thru a wireless pipe smoothly like smaller data files and smaller data streams. So I use my boxee via wired mostly. It does stream netflix just fine over wireless as well. I do prefer streaming over wired specially for large data streams however thats been my experiences. To gain the best performance, theres nothing like a wired connection man.

Does any of your devices support 5Ghz N mode only? Not alot do. I still need to check out my MacBook Pro and see how it can handle BD files on 5Ghz N mode.  ::)  If your devices only support 2.4Ghz N node then the higher and larger HD files and resolution media can be played over it, just know that you might not see the best performance while using wireless.

2.05na is a 2-part update, if you go to the firmware section on dlink's site you'll see them ....
i didn't hang out on that version, updated to 2.06na right after, so i can't say much about it.

the issues i saw on 2.02 didn't affect wireless.

as far as streaming large media files, some choppy playback is expected, if you experience it 30% of the playback time you must have decent sized videos (larger than 4GB) or they have high video bitrates ...

my movies are encoded around 4Mbps average with inflections up to 25 in some complex frames. i see jutters & choppy play only for about 10% of the time when streaming thru a g connection.
