Limited Connectivity.
« on: November 02, 2011, 09:12:38 PM »

For the past few months I have started encountering several times a day where the router will just stop transmitting data. The wireless connection will not disconnect, but all traffic stops. When this happens, I am still connected to the router via wifi but when I attempt to log into the router it is unable to access. Anyone have any ideas?

When you lose the wifi connections, does your wired connection give out too? Also, does it fix itself on it's own, or what do you have to do to fix it?

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Somethings to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Well well well, I was just about to post a thread with a very similiar issue however it is both my wireless and LAN connections.
It has happened twice now in the past month or so.  Where my internet will be working fine and the next stops working and I can not even access my router settings by typing in its IP.  I also can not access my modem, (obviously).
The only way I can get it working again is to unplug the power cable and plug in back on and let the router boot up again, after this it is running good again.

Furry, I will try to answer your questions off the top of my head.

What HW version is your router? Don't know
What FW version is currently loaded? 1.21NA

What ISP Service do you have? Cable
What ISP Modem do you have? Cox cable
What ISP Modem make and model do you have? Cisco DPQ-3212

Somethings to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?  Yes
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. I am using the sticky game fuel rules
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual. Already off
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Already off
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Computer and XBOX's have reserved addresses.  WiFi Cell phone and DirectTV do not.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. Already are
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP. Already are

What wireless modes are you using? G and N, I use both.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N? No
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES. Set to WPA2 and AES
What wireless devices do you have connected? PC (limited use), Wii, and cellphone
Any cordless house phones? Yes, 2.4Ghz band
Any other WiFi routers in the area? One of my neighbors wireless routers show up when I check for wireless devices.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. Testing what?  This has happened after playing the xbox and using the internet
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing. What tests should I be running?

I wonder if I should update the firmware?

What HW version is your router? Don't know
Look at the sticker under the router. Should say A1 or A2.
What FW version is currently loaded? 1.21NA

Some routers had issues with this version, not all however some.My A1 had issues with it however when I bought an A2 that came loaded with it, it never has had an issue and is still loaded with it.

Furry,
I will check what HW I have installed when I get home tonight, the router is only ~3months old so I would think it has the newer HW on it A2 but you know what happens when you assume......

Oh and to answer Harry Q, I get too impatient to wait to see if the router fixes it on its own so I just unplug the router and plug it back in.

Ahh, a MTA. So more importantly, do you lose phone service, or atleast have phone problems when your internet cuts out? If so, contact Cox. If not, try to go to 192.168.100.1 and find a tab that says "Logs" or something like that and paste us the results from around the time of the problem?

I never checked the phone lines when it happens but that is a good idea, I will have to remember that next time it happens.

Last time I logged into my modem there was no logs tab to click, I think they have this locked down or something.  I have a cox contact that can check the logs remotely, I will shoot him an e-mail.

I am more led to believe it has something to do with my router since when it happens my router is not even letting me log into from my PC.

What HW version is your router? A2
What FW version is currently loaded? 1.23NA

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Jackson Energy Authority, cable
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router? there is no modem. its built into a box mounted outside.

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N? tried all combinations
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES. WPA2/AES
What wireless devices do you have connected? one Laptop
Any cordless house phones? no
Any other WiFi routers in the area? yes, it is an apartment building

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

-----------
I do not have phone service though the provider, only cell phone. OS is windows 7 ultimate. No other wired connections to test this on. doesn't seem  like an ISP problem seeing as that I cannot access the router when this occurs.

Try single mode G with out any security to test?
Try connecting wired only if you can and see if you experience the same thing. Turn off wireless on the router while testing?

I would use InSSIDer application to see what routers are near by and channels they use then set your router for an open channel thats not being used.

Looks like FTTP (AKA Fiber). Man, thats tricky.

But your right, very well might not be related to ISP at all. Problems at ISP can cause routers to lock up though. I have seen some ISP send odd traffic that plays havok with the routers firewall, or if your router isn't configured with the right connection info from the ISP, it can cause a lock up. Having a ISP modem/router with the same default gateway of router is a good example of this. So its not unheard of. My suggestions:

1. Check the logs of the router around the time of the incident. Reply with them here. Make sure you remove any MAC addresses or personal info.

2. If you disconnect the ethernet from the wall to the router, and instead connect it direct to your PC, what IP and gateway do you get? Not the exact IP ofcourse but:
    192.x.x.x
    172.x.x.x
    10.10.x.x
    something else?
