Good speed on cable, poor via DIR-825 router
« on: December 08, 2011, 11:22:19 PM »

I've recently upgraded my broadband connection to a 70/10 Mb/s line, and received a Thompson modem. All testing done on cable, not WiFi!

When connecting directly to the Thompson modem I get 70/10 http://www.speedtest.net/result/1637883723.png
But, when I connect through the modem i get 9/9 http://www.speedtest.net/result/1637875472.png
After this initial test my downstream has dropped, and stabilized around 2 Mb/s.

I've tried setting the WAN port on the DIR-825 to auto, 100, and 1000, but no success. With my old Thompson modem and my 25/2.5 Mb/s line I got full speed through the DIR-825 router, so I know that the router is capable of 25 Mb/s down, and 9 Mb/s up at least.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Modem Model Number do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Thank you for your response. All tests still done via cable, and not wifi. I even tested with a couple of different cables to see if that made a difference.

Just today I flashed the router with firmware 2.05EU, and did one factory reset before loading my config.bin again.
The modem is a Thomson TCM471, which has no router function.

A slight improvement on the broadband, I'm now on 6 Mb/s instead of 2 Mb/s, but nowhere near the 70 Mb/s I have when I bypass the router. It still baffles me that the previous Thomson modem gave me 25 Mb/s down, and 2.5 Mb/s up, just like my ISP promised, so I know that the DIR-825 with current configuration, and cables are capable of more than the 6 Mb/s I'm getting now.

A DIR-655 costs me around USD 100, but I'm reluctant to pay that if the result is the same.

Any more advise?

Since you updated FW, did you happen to follow the FW update sticky process?

Please review it and let us know.

I would recommend doing a factory reset and not load the old config file and test once more.

Yes, I did make sure to read the sticky prior to doing the firmware, and I also did a speedtest.net prior to loading the old config. The only improvement was going from 2 Mb/s to 6 Mb/s, both with/without the old config.

I was hesitant to do the firmware, because I agree with the term "if it works, don't fix it", but since I didn't get full speed I was willing to risk it.

I would like to thank FurryNutz for support above, and beyond anything I've EVER met in any support forum. This is by far the best response, and qualified support I've ever had, period! Thanks again, and I'll keep you posted on my progress.

So far we've gotten the speed up to 50 Mb/s down, and 10 Mb/s up.  ;D

Would be interresting to see screens of your settings for WAN, LAN and wireless?

Waiting for CAT6 cables. But for now it's flipping between 70/10, and 30/10. Not sure if it's speedtest.net, or the link between my ISP and speedtest that's under too much stress. Been testing the download using torrent, and usually it's around 3 Mb/s, but it's peaking around 5 Mb/s every now and then.

Another weird issue that has occurred the past few days, one of my laptops looses wifi every now and then, the one you connected to. The other laptop and my Android still have connection though.

Also I found that the DIR-825 was awfully hot when being stressed, might have something to do with the fact that the modem was placed directly on top of it? Probably NOT the best idea...  ;)

But, now something else has come up. On my laptop, that usually connected with 130 Mbps to the DIR-825, now I only get 65 Mbps. The other laptop still connects at 130 Mbps. What gives? I've tried rebooting the device, and turning it off/on again.
