Best way to handle torrents on DND-320 ?
« on: February 03, 2012, 12:29:45 PM »

Hi.

I just purchased the DNS-320 and I'm using the built-in torrent client to download torrents.. However, the client lacks several options such as stopping a torrent and restarting it later, showing ETA time, total MB downloaded or uploaded e.t.c. I had been using uTorrent on my PC and the built-in torrent client of DNS-320 seems quite insufficient, to be honest..

Is there any other way/program to download torrents to DNS-320 ?

Thanks in advance.

Yes there is, Transmission is another alternative.

Refer to my earlier posting on this topic.

I see...Since it seems quite complicated (I'm a noob when it comes to dos-like commands), and the more I use the NAS, the more problems I encounter, I was wondering if there is an easy way (apart from installing transmission) to achieve any of the following :

1) Download only selected files out of a multi-file torrent ?

2) Display the log file/tracker info of a torrent, in order to find out what is wrong when a torrent is not downloading at all.

3) The P2P detail of the web interface only displays the filename of the torrent and nothing else. Isn't it supposed to display more info (seeders, leechers e.t.c) ?

4) I also have the following problem :

When a torrent is completely downloaded but still remains active in the web interface, libtorrent starts seeding it... If I stop seeding the torrent through the web interface and I afterwards press "Start" again, instead of continuing to seed the completed torrent, the client re-downloads it. AFAI can understand, this happens because the fully downloaded torrent has been moved to the "Complete" folder, the client can't find it so it starts re-downloading it again in the "Incomplete" folder... (Hope this makes sense). How can I prevent this from happening ? I guess storing ALL torrents (complete and incomplete) to a one and only folder can do the job, however I cannot change this parameter through the interface. Any help ?

5) Can I update the libtorrent version in the NAS with a newer one that, perhaps, is more versatile, without needing to go through all the hassle of heavily tweaking the NAS (as I said, I'm a complete noob !). Isn't there supposed to be an easy way to at least update the integrated programs with their newer versions ?

All in all, I am a bit disappointed by the NAS's torrent downloading capabilities and would like to make it a bit more useful without the need to tweak it/install another torrent client (which I don't understand how to do !!  :( )

Thanks !

Actually it's not, just need to be a little patience and follow the instructions accordingly.

As to your questions regarding the built-in P2P client, here is my take on it.

1) It's not possible
2) No logging feature
3) No such feature
4) I believed there's a script that move completed download into another folder and it's not possible to change. FYI, D-link do not release source for their own developed programs.
5) Only D-link can do so

The only hope is to raise to D-link and hoping they will fix it in the next firmware release but seriously I have my doubt. BTW, if you're on private site and wish to use the DNS-320 P2P client for seeding you can forget it as this "unknown" client is likely to be banned.

The best thing you could do is install FFP and Transmission as Albert said.
After that, you can use the Transmission GUI, with that you can add torrents remotely, add them into subfolders (for example in Music, Movies, Games, ...), you can select what files from the torrent to download, you can even see the connected peers and some of their info (IP, speed, ...) oh, and you can set it for how much longer to seed the file (in minutes or in seed ratio).

It's not that hard, and installing FFP doesn't affect your NAS (at least not as much as people are afraid), you can always just remove/rename the FFP folder created on the first HDD and on the next reboot FFP will be disabled.

say what? That is too weird. I can ping it but...

This fails from cli in W7:
telnet kylek.is-a-geek.org 31337

However, this works:
telnet kylek.is-a-geek.org 22

Could it be my ISP is blocking higher ports? Cox @ San Diego, CA.

Why would you need to telnet into Kylek's server just to download files? It's clear problem is at your end, if the link is down just wait for it to come up.

Albert,

just for testing.  Thanks to it, I know it is not the destination server.

Now, why I cannot connect to it on 31337 but I can on 22, do not know. Tried a MAC, W7 and wget within the NAS. No luck. Others have no issue with port 31377
