Good catch Hi-Def.
I should have posted this sooner as well:
Link>Wireless Installation Considerations

Ambient room temp could play a role however usually it shouldn't.
Any chance if you posting temp numbers?
I know that the DIR-857 is being effected by temp heat.
Anyone try the Wireless Consideration as a test and see if this helps. I do run one of my routers like this in my bedroom. Works well.

Good points here.

But keep in kind that is a WAN issue I observe, not LAN. Meaning that no wireless connectivity is lost, just Internet connectivity.

So far, I've test Multicast Stream ON (was off) => Still have connectivity drops on high traffic so this is eliminated.

Now, I've disable the IPV6 protocol in Windows since the DIR-655 A4 doesn't not support it, I observe a lot of " UPnP renew entry 255.255.255.255 ... UDP timeout:-1 'Teredo' " in the log. So, I'll see in a couple of days.

Feedback to come.

We've see it were some routers don't support IPv6 and new OS's do and are enabled in the OS by default. Disabling IPv6 in the OS seems to help.

Follow-up:

With IPv6 disabled I got two WAN drop during the night (about 40 minutes between the the drops)

I immediatly observed in the log: Blocked outgoing ICMP packet (ICMP type 3) from ... to .... on each occurence. On the two occurences, they are right at same time as the drops but I can't figure out if it's preceding the WAN drop or it's following it...

Will try other settings tonight.

More feedback to come.

bump.

I too am having the SAME exact symptoms as everyone else has replied with the router. I've tried every solution given, and still no luck. I'm starting to think the router is defective, it was at first working wonderful when out of the box, then a few months down the road it just started disconnecting on wireless; the wired is solid as a rock too, no disconnects on that end.

Are U experiencing this on high traffic as well? (Playing Online Game or intensive web browsing...)

I'll load my 655 back up with v2.10 this evening and test gaming since I have a 2nd xbox to play with now.

Thanks Furry,

Yesterday, I've made sure that all ports are opened according to the application to ensure proper packets transmission. Further tests tonight.

Hi,

I have had my DIR-655 for a long time. About a month ago this issue started happening randomly. It is really bad. My internet connection drops constantly. Sometimes I have to power cycle the router and other times I think it eventually comes back up. What is causing this problem? The other access points in the area have really weak signals and are in different channels than mine. I checked using a wifi analyzer. And the wired connection works flawlessly. It is just the wireless that randomly drops internet. This router has worked solidly at two different houses over the past years but now within the past month it decides to randomly drop internet connections. What is causing this?

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What region are you located?

Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Temporarily disable SPI for testing.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Please review information here regarding WiFi congestion areas:

No, the hardwire PC is perfectly fine, as if it was connected straight to the modem, never one disconnect, and online game play does not lag at all...the wireless pretty much does not connect at all at this rate.

As promised: Update

It seems silly but I've upgraded my Nvidia Graphic driver for my GTX550 to 310.xx on Jan 15th and no disconnect since....

The last disconnect I had was on Jan 14th.

More to come.
