Overall Performance Of The DIR 655..........
« on: February 25, 2012, 06:56:54 PM »

Im getting this router on Monday. What would you guys say about this router? I use to thought it was one of the best out there. Use to cost 13.00 something. Ive heard real good reviews and real bad reviews about it. The bad was it drops alot and reboots itself alot. I hope thats because some people dont know how to update the firmware and set it up properly...you know.

Is it a good idea to use the setup wizard to let them set it up...or do it manually? Will the setup wizard do just fine? Then go back and manually put in my own wireless settings? Let me know what you guys think of the router...good and bad. Ill just be using it for basic stuff. My PC and Laptop will be in the same bedroom as the router.  I have my PS3 maybe wireless on it. And my Xbox will be wired.

I'm a little pissed off at my router atm and planning on trashing it for something better but to answer your question; the DIR 655 is a pretty good router that has incredible range. I live in an apartment and I'm able to view my router from the first floor lobby (I live on the Fifth floor btw). The only problem I would say with it is the durability. I would say maybe two weeks into having the DIR 655 you may start experiencing problems. Nothing serious but definitely noticeable. I've had it for over a year now and the connection has brought about some serious lag and high ping. I guess it all depends on what you're using it for and how many devices you have connected to it. Sorry I don't have much knowledge about networks and routers and what not but grade = Satisfactory.

Yea see..im hoping its what the person is doing and using. Me nothing too big. Everything is in the same room as the router to. BUT...the person im getting mine from said they had it for 1 year. But they seem really trusted. 100% feedback on ebay. They said the router is rock solid after putting the 1.34 firmware on it. The husband just wanted something bigger becase he streams HD videos. See....ill be using this for basic stuff. So im hoping all goes well for me. Thanks for that info man. Appreciate it.

10 minutes after first post and you're dissing people for not replying?  Are you that lonely for human interaction?   :P
Even the virtual, over the internet kind? :)

OK....I have one of these units and it has served me well for many months.  I use it mainly as a firewall, with only some wireless devices connecting to it.  Behind it I have a big Netgear 16-port switch (my whole house was wired with ethernet cabling when it was built) and into the switch goes 4 desktops PCs (only 2 get get used regularly), a DIR601 that is setup as an acess point upstairs (the 655's in the basement), 2 Vizio internet TVs, and an Xbox.

Wirelessly, the things that could connect to it (although I try to keep stuff going thru the access point router), are wife's work laptop, my work laptop, home laptop, Wii, PS/3, Roku box, and the kids' iPod Touches.

Obviously, not all of these things are going on at one time.  I'm not a network-savvy person, but setup has been painless by automatic mode and most things have worked and worked well by auto setup.  I'm sure my traffic isn't optimized by any means....the only thing I've done is turn off by SSN broadcasting.

The only thing that hasn't worked is connecting Droid phones (I was given some suggestions to fix after posting here -- haven't followed up ::) )and my son complains his PS/3 NAT is strict -- which isn't an issue on the Xbox, for some reason.

Ok now, no need for all this.  >:(

DJROD, please be professional and treat people with some respect on here. Not body gets paid here and we come there to help each other out on our own accord. If people don't respond to posters in time it only means that I've posted something or others don't have any other input to add to what I may have said. Also people have jobs too ya know.

Don't bite the hand that feeds. Please.

Spazbear, if you having connection issues, please post a new thread and we'll help you out on the PSN strict issues.

I think everything is going good. Even tho i fell asleep for a bit. I left my laptop on. No drops or anything for the last 7 hours or so. Even tho thats not long enough to test. But then again....its a good chunk of hours to say nothing bad happened yet.

So far so good. Havent seen 1 problem. My nephews laptop drops on the WBR thats connected to it. I gotta keep unplugging it for him. It was doing that even before i got the 655...ever since i put the 1.05 firmware on it. NEVER dropped when it had the 1.04.

How much of a big difference is the 660 to thr 655? I mean....i know it has a LCD screen. But...anything else that would actually be useful? Range the same? 6x range and 14x speed the same? Just wondering.

I believe there isn't much differences. I don't see any FW updates for it so I think it was a limited production model. I don't even see IPv6 for it.

I noticed. It doesnt seem that popular. I wonder whats in the LCD that you can see. Looks like the exact same router...with a few upgrades thats not worth buying the router for. If it was the exact same in performance and price...i would've gotten it just for the kool LCD looks.
