HELP please Network issue dir-655
« on: February 27, 2012, 05:13:43 PM »

First off I am a total noob when it comes to routers and networking.

My problem is that even tho I can connect to the internet I can no longer connect to my other machines and especially my hp media smart server.

I just got the dir-655 b1 firmware 2.03 (i upgraded, thought it would help but no).

I was using the wrt54g with the dd-wrt router software. Connecting an iMac running lion (LAN), media smart server (LAN), xbox (LAN) and various laptops using leopard and xp (wireless). It was working fine except the transfer speeds were slow between the server and iMac. So I figured it was because the ports on the back were only 10/100 and not 1 gigabit. That's why i decided to upgrade to the Dir-655 to get the transfer speeds up.

However when I installed the dir-655 I was able to get an internet connection but lost my ability to access my other computers. I could see my server but couldn't connect to it. Tech support had me try and ping the server and other cpu's and it failed to ping. It just seems like the Dlink clamped down on my network. I hooked up the linksys back up because I need to access my files and it works fine. Anyone out there can help me out? if not I'm going to send this router back in a few days.

And also please talk me thru it like a child because I really don't get most of the router jargon.

Thanks in advance.

The DLink and the wrt are probably using different DHCP address ranges.  Did you power down all the other machines after you changed out routers?

Yep, I rebooted all the machines as well as the modem and router.

Even tho im new to this router myself. I remember when setting up....it gave me a password and said to save it. It said it was for adding other computers to that router. I may be way off. Just thought i'd bring it up.

I would make sure your PCs and devices are set up for Auto Obtain IP addressing as well.
Can you access the 655 web page at 192.168.0.1?

All the computers can access the web wether it be wireless or connected.

yep, I can access the page. I see all the machines have their new IP addresses, I just can't connect one to the other as I had done with the previous router.

Make sure your shared folders are enabled or re-enabled on each pc.
Also disable WLAN Partition if it's enabled under Advanced/Adv Wireless.

Also give the computers some time to learn the new route to the other computers.  Computers remember the path they took to another system by the MAC addresses of the systems it passed through to get there.  Introducing a new router with a new MAC address confuses them for a little while until they refresh all their caches.

So here's an update. I had two different friends come by at different times with different results to help me out. Having said that. I was able to get it working for regular machines but not my hp media smart server.

I reset the router to default and started from scratch after loads of messing around, basically let's change this and see what happens even tho I really have no idea of what the hell I'm messing with, and in the end the only thing I changed was the following:

I went into the router settings Advanced/network filter and turned on MAC filtering and ALLOW computers listed to access the network drop down menu. Then added each and every machine to the list from the DHCP Client list area. I had never had to do this before but ok. I got excited because now I did see the machines and had limited to full access to them. At this point I figured it was minor file sharing issues I would have to deal with. Before I would get a ghost of the image but could not access anything. So this was good. However, I still can not access my media smart server and since that is one of the most important pieces to the puzzle I'll be sending this back in a day or two unless someone has some simple solution for me.

btw, the settings above are the only changes I have made Literally. I reset the router, didn't deal with wireless connections or anything besides this. I figured one problem at a time and this was the only real problem that needed taking care of.

Try unsharing any shared drives/folders and then resharing them.

FYI, never solved my problem connecting to my HP mss ex495 server. I looked online everywhere and to no avail. I'm just going to return the Dir-655 and get a linksys. Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.
