My router is 651.

I don't know where to begin but I have about 4 land lines to the router, and 2-3 wireless computers.  But what I notice is that the internet connection is very slow and things drop.  My downloads would be incomplete, and streaming is terribly slow.  My torrent downloads will always reset.  Simply put, this type of internet connection is terrible.

My settings are automatically set.

What I noticed is when I use heavy demanding bandwidth, like torrent download, my wireless connection on my computer would turn into the 'limited' access icon and I would have to REBOOT my computer to re-connect to the internet successfully (NO MODEM/ROUTER) reboot.  I've never had issues like this w/ my cisco router, but I wanted to know what is causing this.

I have WPA if that matters.

Thanks.

Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

I don't know where to begin.  The cable folks came in and did a split connection.  On the land line, they ran a straight connection to a modem connected to a cisco router.  The connection in loading websites seem very fast, relative to what we've experienced.  It's like a dedicated land line computer through a router and loads perfectly.

The DLINK router, which powers just wireless connection and 1 land line doesn't seem to be able to handle loads or speeds.

I'm thinking, either the router is crap, or the cable between the 2nd modem and our DLINK router is crappy.  I really don't know, and I'm a bit tired with things.

Before the technician came, websites would load, downloads would drop off and disconnect.  Now after the re-wiring, I run into extremely slow speeds.  Websites would show me the 'server error' message and simple photo attachments to e-mail will take nearly 15-30 mins!!

All this is happening w/ the new cable modem.

I tried using utorrent and it would run at higher speeds, but then disconnect and die out.

It doesn't seem to me like it's a channel thing, nor a wireless thing.  Rather, it seems like the DLINK router itself, but I don't know.

We had a LINKSYS WRT54 before and it was pretty dependable, given what I've experienced now w/ DLINK.

We have the DIR651 and newest firmware 1.10NA.

I'm frustrated, and feel like I wasted time and money w/ the DLINK.  I guess I'm frustrated on many levels.

Hi,

Could you talk more about the DHCP.  We plan to have 3 wireless, and 2 land lines on this router.  Do I simply hit reserve when I see the connected devices?  My DHCP range is about .100 to .150

Under ADVANCED WIRELESS SETTINGS, I've done what you've suggested WMM ENABLE is checked marked though, and I'm not sure what that is.

I also have transmit power on HIGH.

My settings are on WPA and what not.  I've tried diff't channel and strictly on N settings w/ AUTO mode.

There is a WAN IP address has an address, a diff't one not the generic 192.x.x.x thing.

I'm sorry for being choppy.

Websites are still loading slow, and it'll time out, and I'll have to hit the refresh and it'll then re-load.  This is weird.

My wireless connection bars have dropped to 2-3 bars now.  Prior to the changes, it was constantly at 4 bars, despite bad internet connection.

Uggh. I'm having grief. =(

Can you draw us a picture of your ISP set up? How many routers are connected? The 651 and a Cisco router? Having 2 routers on the same line will cause problems.
Example: ISP Modem> Cisco router> DIR-651?

Can you filling some of the question asked in my initial reply to you? This will help us get a better idea of what you have.

I've attached a picture.  I hope this helps.  Basically the cable guy is charging us for two modems I think ( I wasn't home at the time).  He wired a connection from the outside into a modem+cisco router to power 2 land computers and another modem (tel + internet) + dlink to the remaining devices in our household.  This doesn’t include potential wireless printers, and our smart phones. LOL

After the settings you suggested, I went ahead and downloaded a couple of things from those fileserve hosts and had the media streaming boxes run together.  Prior to the settings, these downloads would drop incomplete or crash whenever someone consumed more bandwidth.  When I woke up, it seems like the downloads were un-interrupted and were completed.

Could the settings you’ve suggested been the difference all along?

Ultimately, we want to find a way to handle all the devices in our home w/o over paying.  The cable guy did suggest to us about some ‘commercial’ grade line, but I don’t know if it’s some sort of gimmick.

The streaming devices do consume higher bandwidth as well as the land line users.  They game and all that. For myself, I am on the wireless connection but would want to enjoy uninterrupted downloads and streams.

I haven’t tested the utorrent client yet with this, as it would crash my wireless connection.

I hope I didn’t go overboard, but I thank you for your help.  Please let me know what you need me to provide, so that you can help me. =)

Wow, all this huh?
Well since you do a lot of gaming, streaming and torrenting, maybe you do need a bigger pipe.  ::)
What are you paying for now? UP and down? I have 50down/2up cable. I game mostly. Some streaming here and there.

It's possible that my suggestions helped your situation. What did you change or use out of the suggestions?

Hope it works better for you.

If you seem to do a lot of internet stuff. I would consider a bigger pipe maybe and simplify the network down to one ISP modem and one router. I recommend the Motorola SB 6121 or maybe in yoru case if the ISP supports it, SB 6180. I use the 6180 and my 655 works great on it. This depends on the ISP support and your ture internet needs.

Hi,

I wanna know more about the DHCP thing you talked about, as well as the DHCP range?  Maybe it was the enabling of the multi-cast stream and firewall settings.  I'm still trying to play with the channels.

Over here, the cable services are pretty standard.  By bigger pipe, do you mean I should consider the commercial package?  Is there a way I can validate or speed test this?

To make it easier, I wanted to condense everything into one setup as you've mentioned but I'm not sure if it would handle?  Would the router be an issue here?

The technician replaced our modem with a thicker and bigger one. LOL Not that it matters, I don't think.

Is there any other tweaking you could think of for the router?  Thank you very much for your help.

Check your speeds out using a wired PC to the router at speedtest.net or Visual Ware

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I see some improvement in that the wireless downloads can go all the way w/o interrupting.  However, when another device starts itself, it kind of creates some shock.

In terms of the DHCP, how big of a range should I set it at?

Do I just basically reserve the DHCP list for my devices?

Thanks

When you see the devices appear in the Dynamic Clients list, select the Reserve work link in that row. This will populate the Add Reservation section. Here you can give a Name for ease of identification. Select Add. Do this for all Devices then select Save at the top and have the router reboot.

^ Thanks!

Would I have to lower my DHCP range?

I'm able to download torrent and other downloads w/o things dropping.  This seems to be a big improvement on many ends.

On a side note, I plan on getting cat 6 cables.  Would you think this to be helpful? Are cat 6 the new standard? I figured, every little bit counts.

Thank you again for your kind help.

You don't have to lower the DHCP range. Just use the default pool.

I forgot what the default pool was, and for mines I think I had to input a range.
