Dir-645 Disconnecting
« on: April 05, 2012, 10:43:11 AM »

Hey, I'm having trouble with my DIR-645, it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting once every hour.
Sometimes i wont even notice since its only down for like 1-2 seconds but most of the times i will get disconnected from games and such.
I have tried to figure out what makes it do this without any progress.
Connection Type : DHCP Client
Cable Status : Connected
Network Status : Connected

Connection Up Time : 0 Day 0 Hour 49 Min 58 Sec (this never goes over 1 hour before disconnect)
MAC Address : b8:a3:86:20:1e:81
IP Address : 213.112.155.39
Subnet Mask : 255.255.248.0
Default Gateway : 213.112.152.1
Primary DNS Server : 195.54.122.199
Secondary DNS Server : 195.54.122.204
Thank You in Advance.

Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the 4500 gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Can you ask the ISP if they can see any issues on there logs regarding any disconnections or anything on there side?
Also ask them about MTU? Usually default for cable is 1500 however since you  don't have an actual cable modem, it's possible there could be a different value.

Also there is a DIR-645_A1_FW: v1.02b08 (for WW) that you could try if your interested.

Any chance you have family for a friend in a different location you could test this out on? I'm wondering if this problem tracks or could be related between the ISP and this router.

Keep us posted.

this problem is an easy fix. The trick is in this line

DHCP: Client receive ACK from 213.112.152.1, IP=213.112.156.205, Lease time=3600.

the dir-645 only gets an IP for 3600 seconds, 1 hour. What you have to do is the following:

go to the status page of the router and write everything down from the WAN section, so IP adress, mac adress, subnet mask, gateway, dns etc..

next go to the setup page and click on manual in the internet section

instead of dynamic IP (DHCP) you choose Static IP and you fill in the information from above. Let the router reboot.

Instead of disconnects every 1 hour the lease time is now 168 hours or possible never.

I would not do this as your WAN IP address from your ISP Modem changes every so often and you'll get disconnected or the router will fail to work correctly as the Modem is trying to pass a newer IP address while the router is still looking for the old one.  ::)

I fixed mine this way. But I have to ad that the IP was 192.168.0.1 so it was the DCHP server from the cablemodem that gave me troubles. Maybe this configuration is different.
