problems with FW 1.03,1.04 and 1.05 -keeps loosing connection
« on: October 29, 2012, 02:28:57 AM »

Hello

After spending several hours of the weekend setting up my unit as a repeater and having flashed several firmwares ( 1.03/1.04/1.05 ), it keeps working for just about 10 minutes and afterwards it looses the IP given from the router and becomes inaccessible... in order to work again for another 10 minutes I have to unplug it and plug it in again.

I have tested practically every possible situation, even on different networks (home and work) but still the result is the same.
It doesn't matter if how I set it up, it keeps doing the same.

An example:
At the work connection the DIR-505 connects to the thomson router(192.168.17.254), and afterwards through the DIR-505 my mobile device receives the IP 192.168.17.136 , after about 10 minutes it changes to 192.168.0.80 becoming inaccessible.

Any advice is highly appreciated
tks

Is there a main host router in use?
What region are you located?

What wireless modes are you using on the host router? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on the host router?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Also what is the distance the 505 is from the host router?

What region are you located?

Where did you get v1.05 FW from? I don't see it listed on the web site.

hello and thank you for your reply.

yes there is a main router in use ( 192.168.1.1 ) with dhcp enabled and I'm in Portugal, Europe.

The host router is set to b/g/n , channel choice is automatic and it reaches about 130mbps near the laptop so I'm assuming the router is locked to 20mhz or 20/40mhz . Security type is wpa2-AES and all of my devices support wpa2 AES (100% sure).

I have 2 cordless phones in the house (but only one base transmitting signal). There are several wifi routers in the area, 4 to 6 maybe, and I'm about 7 meters away from the host router with only one wall between them.

Now the thing is, I've downgraded to 1.03 from 1.05 at about 1,5hours ago and I'm using it here at work to test it with the same SSID once again. I've simply flashed the 1.03firmware, reset to factory defaults, connected to computer through cable and run the setup to boot the original ssid.

It has been working flawlessly so far... so I'll have to try again at home later since here, and for now it's working perfectly.

I'll keep you posted but if you see any thing on my setup that might be incorrect then please let me know.

Thanks

I've downloaded it through the DIR-505 maintenance page AFTER flashing the 1.04 firmware(clicked the link to check for updates and there it was). Although I find it rather weird not seeing it anywhere also on the web...

Ok, maybe they have put it on the back end servers and just haven't posted it on the main web site.

Try changing your host routers wifi mode from Mixed ALL to Mixed G and N and see how that does.

If you have other neighboring Wifi routers near by, this can effect and cause interferences. I would look to see what channels they are using and find one that is not in use and set a manual channel on the host router. This might help.

If the cordless phone happens to be on the 2.4Ghz range, yes.

What model host router do you have? You might take a look at the wifi settings on it and see if you can turn off items like WPS. Some items on routers are not needed all the time and can be disabled and re-enabled at a later time.

It's a wireless modem/router from the provider ZON, but that's not the problem for sure since everything has been working flawlessly so far.

I do believe the phone has the 2.4ghz range, so it might be downgrading performance but I don't believe it can be causing a total loss of signal between the DIR-505 and the host router, afterall they are only about 7meters away.

About the WPS settings, done that been there...I've tested every possible combination trust me.

I'm just gonna do the same exact procedure at home as I've did here at work and I'll let you know how it turned out.

Tks for your replies!

Ok, Keep us posted. The phone could be an issue however see how it goes. You might keep an eye on the wifi the next time the cordless phone is in use and see if you notice anything.

Good luck.

I did have a similar issue with the DIR-505 and the 1.03 firmware. Hadn't seen it with 1.04.

thank you both.

the 1.04 firmware enables a couple of additional options on the DIR-505, so I'm not gonna update it again if it's not necessary (just in case).

BTW: where should I look for updates for my device? through it's IP page on maintenance? are all firmwares the same? ex: USA = European?

Since your located in Portugal, I would check here: Portugal Site

How ever I don't see anything listed here.
UK Site is up to v1.03.

I would contact your regional local D-Link support office and ask them what if officially supported and available for your region. There are some differences between NA and EU versions. I presume that the web sites need to be updated.

one last question, with the "ideal condition" what is the top speed of the DIR-505 ?
