I have to reset my wireless router multiple times per day. Seems to just be our two laptops that fail to connect periodically, not other devices (iPods/cell phones/Wii). Both laptops have Windows 7. Router was replaced 2 years ago (went from Belkin to D-Link DIR-655) and the D-Link started acting like this a few months ago and is getting worse. I updated firmware on router last week in hopes it would fix it, and it is faster, but still needs resetting daily. It is driving us crazy. Any advise is appreciated.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.

What region are you located?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition,and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8 or 9, set compatibility mode and test again.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I have done these things:

Grrrr. It just happened to my wife's laptop and my laptop again. It disconnects and won't reconnect. All other devices stay connected.

Make sure the drivers for the WiFi on the laptops and any desktops are up to date as well.

I don't know how, but there are 16 wifi signals that my laptop can see. I live in a residential neighborhood... I can't even see 16 other houses... some may have multiple.

Not sure how to update the drivers but I'll take a look. Seems odd that they both do it at the same time.

Having that many other WiFi routers near by could cause the router to stop and loose connections. You need to find a open channel thats not being used. Having 16 other WiFi, there may not be any. You may need to change to a 5Ghz WiFi router and upgrade devices to 5Ghz.

How would having multiple signals being broadcast in my area affect my wireless router? Just checked again and there are 12 networks I can connect to.

What other settings can I change on my DIR-655 to possibly prevent the booting of my two laptops?

WiFi can realistically only occupy one channel at a time. Having 2 or more on the same channel causes the signal to become distorted. WiFi routers are programming to notice the interference and will stop and try to find another channel that maybe open or has less interference. Why the default settings on routers are for Auto Scan which can be set to a manual channel if one is open and not being used.

Link> Use InSSIDer to find out what routers are near by and channel they are using. If all channels, 1 thru 11 are being used, then your going to have problems on 2.4Ghz. So the reason why I mention 5Ghz.

Now it won't connect at all after resetting it for the third time today (currently logged on to my neighbors signal). Just checked and there are 22 networks available... but more than half of them are "2WIRE###"

I am so fed up that I may just go buy a new router. This should not be that difficult.

You could get a new router however that probably wont help as the new router will be effected by your neighborhood being congested by other WiFi routers being on 2.4Ghz and the 1-11 channels being used up by the other near by WiFi routers. Having from 16 to beyond 20 is going to be problematic on 2.4Ghz for any 2.4Ghz WiFi router.

Your best bet would be is to get into a new router, something with 5Ghz radio. DIR-825, 835, 827 and 857 are a few that have both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios. Now if you got a 5Ghz router, You'll need to do one of the following:
Upgrade devices to 5Ghz, either by using a 5Ghz USB adapter connecting it to a open USB port, DWA-160 is a 5Ghz adapter. For those devices that may have LAN wired ports and you want them to run on a wireless connection, Get a DLink DAP-1522 or 1533 which are both 2.4 and 5Ghz access points that can run in bridge mode. Connecting any wired LAN cable to this device will connect those devices wirelessly between the DAP and the DIR series router broadcasting at 5Ghz. So there are a couple of ways to use 5Ghz on some of your devices.

Unfortunately some devices, like cell phones don't support 5Ghz, yet. Some iPads and laptops do. You need to see if any of your laptops and PC which might support 5Ghz already. Find the ones that don't and consider upgrading those using the suggestions above.

The main problem is not your router, it's the router having to deal with everyone elses wifi router thats near by and being there so many, it can't find a open or clear channel to use with out being interfered with.

What do you have your security set at? If your laptops are older they may not support WPA2-AES. Drop down to WPA2-TKIP or just go to WPA. That might help with the wireless connectivity. It can't be your 20-40 Mhz channel width as D-Link routers only have auto. Try going with no security for a few minutes and see what happens.

Security is not the problem here as more of his neighborhood is congested with other WiFi routers and there taking up all the channels.
