Sites not loading after updating firmware to V2.10NA
« on: May 21, 2013, 09:12:05 PM »

Hi Dlink community... after upgrading the firmware of my DIR-655 RevB1 to 2.10NA , I've been running into the below annoying issue at least once a day.. i finally figured out how to go around it but not a fix. here's what happens:
Gotta mention here, the below happened to me on sites like Google.com. YouTube.com. etc... that are rarely down. Also, it happens on both wireless and wired connections.

1) I am a Firefox user. I'm usually browsing the internet and everything is fine, i open a new tab and enter a new URL or click on a link that takes me to a site and get hit by "Server not Found" page. i usually don't see any the page processing or anything. it just takes me there. When i select "Try Again", nothing happens. it's as if i hit a dead end. keep in mind, that if i try to go to another site on the same tab or others, everything is working fine.

2) So i thought this was a Firefox issue so i opened IE and tried accessing the same site, i get the "This page can't be displayed" page. Again, if i try to access any other sites on the same tab or new tab in IE, everything is working fine. Also, trying to refresh in both browsers is pointless.

3) Clicked on "Fix Connection" and it tried going through the motions but it couldn't figure out what the problem and i end up with:

4) and here's the funny but confusing thing, i click on "Explore additional options" button and it opens the additional information troubleshooting window but at the same time, the tab with the site i'm having troubles with starts processing and loads the site.  ???

5) i go back to Firefox and reload the page there, and it works !!

I bought this router late last year. i called Dlink about this and tech support tried to change some settings in the router but issue still there. i tried following some advices listed in other post here about changing some setting like turning QOS off etc... but to no avail.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Link>Welcome!

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed before and after doing the FW update?
Follow this for doing FW updates: FW Update Process

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

I'm having the exact same problem as the OP.

It seems totally random which sites I can access and which ones I can't Just as an example, at 10 am this morning, I couldn't access support.dlink.com. I got the "Cannot connect to website" or whatever. Same message on FireFox and IE.

Now at 11:30 am the same site works for me like magic. How long will it continue working? Nobody knows...

I've had this router for about a month now and had no problems. I upgraded to FW 2.10 about two weeks ago in an attempt to get the SharePort utility to work with my printer.

Now I've had this problem since around Friday.

To the questions asked by the moderator:

Hardware version: B1
FW: 2.10
Region: Canada
Connection: Wired and wireless (same problem on both)
Factory Reset after update?: Yes
ISP: Cable.
I've connected my computer directly to the ISP modem and had no problems with any website. So it must be a problem with the router.

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
After the factory reset was performed, did you set up the router from scratch?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Swap out cables between router and ISP modem and PC?

After I installed the new FW I think I had to set it up from scratch because everything was wiped. I didn't use the install wizard though, just the manual way. But that was 2 weeks before the problem happened.

I use Kaspersky and have never had a problem with it ever blocking anything that was "safe".

The modem is a RCA DHG 525.

All the cables worked fine on the previous router so I don't really see why that would be the problem.

SO it had been working 2 weeks ago with the new FW? I would presume that if that is the case then the problem could be else where, like the ISP modem and or ISP service.

I recommend that you have your ISP double check the ISP cable lines and signal going into the ISP modem. Make sure they are to spec for the modem.

I think your modem has a build in router already:
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

It is similar to this one by chance? http://www.speedguide.net/routers/technicolor-thomson-dhg535-voip-cable-gateway-886

I would try a factory reset before and after the setup from scratch using IE to send the file. You can be disconnected from the ISP modem while you do this. Just get the file before hand.

Ensure your ISP signals to the cable modem is good and cables are in good working condition. Upgrade the modem if one is available. The SB 6 Series is a good modem. My DIR-655 with v2.10NA works well with it.

There's another thing I've noticed.

Sometimes the websites load just as plain.

No pictures or borders or any kind of "fancy" items. Just Times New Roman text.

Sounds like a DNS or ISP connection issue...signal.

If you want to, go back and do a factory reset, upload v2.03NA, factory reset once more then setup up from scratch. Test again.

I can only find the most current version:

http://support.dlink.ca/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-655

Over the past week the problem hasn't been as bad but still there for the occasional website.

I'm wondering if there is a DNS or ISP service issue now.

You could downgrade to v2.03. It was a good stable version:
http://www.dlink.com/us/en/support/product/dir-655-wireless-n-gigabit-router?revision=us_revb

If you do, factory reset, send the .bin file, factory reset once again. If you still seem to have problems, I'll presume the problem could be with the ISP service and or ISP modem.

Keep us posted.

i will try downgrading to v2.03... that's what the router came with when i purchased it. i upgraded to v2.10 because it addressed iOS 6 compatibility.
