No Internet Access Thru DIR-655
« on: June 30, 2013, 08:01:57 AM »

Bought DIR-655 several years ago, but put it aside after limited use due to poor range & dropped connections. Since several years have elapsed, I don't recall  if I ever determined the cause of those past problems. Now I am trying to use this router once again and have configured using the furnished setup CD. Problem: I have a network connection, but no internet access when using the 655 with wired or wireless connections.

HW A4
FW 1.21
Located in Virginia
Using wired and wireless connection
No FW updates attempted
DSL connection
Modem is Zhone Model 1511-A1-NA
Wired connection is Windows 8 Desktop
Wireless connection is Windows 7 Laptop

Have updated network adapters, checked cables, disabled firewall & av, and both computers connect fine when connected direct to modem.

Have tried various of the tips from the troubleshooting guide, but nothing has worked so far. The ISP tested connection and found the router is not acquiring a new IP address when rebooted. Suggestions?

http://www.zhone.com/products/1511-A1/

  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Furry, I haven't skipped out on you, just waiting on ISP to reply on MTU and bridging their modem. In the meantime I am going to check the DIR-655 on a friend's modem of a different manufacturer. I also have tried a Linksys SRX400 router (older G router) and it has sketchy connection as well. More later.

Just talked to ISP tech and my modem's (Zhone 1511-A1) default setting out of the box is bridge mode and that hasn't been changed. He also confirmed the MTU requirement is 1500.

You might ask the ISP if they have a different modem that you can try. Maybe something with out any built in router that has to be bridged.

Have them check the phone lines and make sure the lines are filtered correctly and set up well.

Have them check the PPPoE connection on the router if they are willing to do that. Should only need user account and password and set Always ON.

Swapped out another modem with ISP, but no change. Also started from scratch and reset DIR-655 to factory defaults, then made the following changes:

1. Changed mode to mixed N&G
2. Reserved IP address for laptop
3. Disabled Traffic Shaping
4. Changed NAT End Point Filtering for UDP and TCP to End Point Independent.

Have tried other combinations and the problem is not resolved. Both computers running Chrome and I'll try changing the suggested Chrome settings next.

What is the status say under Status/Device Info/Wan Section when the 655 is connected to your ISP modem? There should be  WAN IP, Gateway and DNS IP addresses listed here.

No addresses shown for WAN, Gateway, or DNS

Also, altering the Chrome settings didn't help.

It was a Zhone modem, model number 6211 (I have returned it). This model is also routing capable. I used this same model modem several years ago when I first bought the 655 and it did work with this model modem, but not well. I put the 655 aside and used a Linksys 400 (G) and it worked fine for a couple years until recently and it started dropping signal and finally lost internet connection all together. Similar to the problem with the 655. Does that history provide any clues?

Wonder if there is a ISP HW issue between that and your routers and something environment related as well.

So your back to the original ISP modem right? If so, can you unbridge the ISP modem and see if this modem as  DMZ option? If it does we could try putting the IP address it gets from the ISP modem into the DMZ on the modem to see if you can get Internet. Possibly turn the 655 in a wired AP could be an option.

I suppose there could be a hardware conflict. Monday I hope to get the ISP tech to check my connection and settings for clues as to why the router is not acquiring IP addresses. I will ask about unbridging and going the DMZ route. This is a small local ISP that partners with Ntelos.

As for an environmental issue, our cordless phones are the only other radio device in our house and I have tested, but not shown improvement when disabling the phones. No garage door opener, no significant metal structural components, etc. House is a three story and 3,000 sq ft, but while working on this problem the modem, router, and laptop are on same desk. Environmental probably not a significant factor.

Thanks for the help and I hope to have more info on Monday.
