I can not connect to web server on LAN via URL address
« on: July 11, 2013, 10:18:51 AM »

I can not connect to my web server on my LAN via URL address. This server is hosted on the same LAN that I'm trying to connect through. I can access it via its IP address. This is my current setup.

I have a cable modem hooked directly to the router. From the router, I have 5 to 7 PCs on all the time that are wired and wireless (via Apple AirPort). I have an Apple AirPort setup as an AP only with 2 gaming consoles on it. I have a Synology DS412 that is hosting a web server, media server, file server and FTP/WebDAV server that is directly connected to the router. The web and WebDAV server ports are forward for access outside of the LAN. I can access them via URL provided by Synology outside my LAN but the URL will not work on the inside of LAN.

This router replaced a Linksys router that died. I had no problems accessing my servers via URL from the LAN or outside the LAN before I replaced the Linksys. The Linksys had an option call "NAT redirect" that handled this problem I'm having now but can't find the equivalent to it on the DIR-657. I did find some NAT settings under advanced firewall settings and tried all possible combinations with no luck. Is there any way to fix this problem I'm having, or am I going to have to return this router and get another Linksys.

Link>Welcome!
  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options if not being used under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

Your only trying to connect to the web host from a device on your LAN side using the URL address and not from the WAN side? If trying to connect from the WAN side you may want to try configuring Virtual Server options as well.

The URL works from WAN. Access from LAN doesn't. I already have the ports forwarded for WAN access as I can access my DSM, Subsonic and WebDAV servers. I can access them all on the LAN if I use the IP address (192.168.x.x) but the URL doesn't work like it did on the Linksys router. Again, it was the NAT redirect option on the Linksys that fixed the URL problem I'm having now.

Hmm, well I don't have much experience with web servers on the LAN side. I presume this could just be an option on the router or configuration that needs to be check out. I would recommend that you phone D-Link support and ask for level 2 or higher support and see if there is a specific setting, option or configuration that needs to be reviewed.

The only option I can think of is the NAT settings in the Firewall section that should be reviewed. There are 3 for TCP and UDP however I'm not sure if this effects how devices interact on the LAN side between each other. One other thing you could try is to install a external Gb network switch and connect your LAN devices to it. This help eliminate any un-necessary router processing, allows better and more direct connections between LAN devices and offers best file xfer speed performance between devices as router can effect this when directly connected to the router and still allows for good Internet connections thru the router as well.

One test to see if you can try, can you connect a PC directly to the web server and try the URL. You'll need to set up a static IP address on each device first then test the URL. I presume this should work and would help eliminate any configuration issues between them.

The URL is assigned to my private IP address. If I use that IP (173.22.x.x) on a PC that's on the LAN, it won't work. If I use the LAN IP address of the device (server IP 192.168.x.x) it works. I know it has something to do with the NAT settings or lack of settings. There's a new firmware update that I noticed and will update it later tonight and test again.

Firmware is 1.00. Hardware version is A1. Region is USA. I don't know what type of cable modem I have, not at the house at the moment. It's what ever MediaCom has sent me but I will post back with more details.

Ok, let us know about the modem model information.

There is a v1.02 FW available.
If you do want to try this, please follow this:

This sucks. I did a firmware update and versions 1.01 and 1.02beta have the NAT options removed under firewall settings. In fact, there are no NAT options at all under any of the settings. It's like they removed NAT completely from the router. If I can't use NAT with this router, its going on eBay cause I have to have NAT.

Are they there if you change the browser style to none or edit mode then log into the routers web page? Not sure if this would help or not. Not sure why they removed it. Were still waiting on the final FW release to come out.

Nope. After the stock firmware, the NAT options have been removed. I have tried with Chrome, Explorer, Firefox and Safari. None of them show the options so I know it was removed from the update.

I've forwarded this onto my contact at D-Link. Can't promise anything however let see if we can help you resolve this. If the feature has been removed, it was probably for some form or reason that we might not find out. However I will recommend the DIR-645 as I also have this router and currently using it online and it does have the NAT options you seek.

I hope we can get some info on this soon so you can get a working solution going for you.  ;)

Please be patient.

Yep. I don't know why, but after the stock firmware there are no options for NAT settings. I have looked in all pages of the router settings (clicking on EVERYTHING) to see if they were hidden.

Thanks for forwarding this. I hope this router can get NAT redirection options.

Would be curious if you downgraded back to v1.00 do the options reappear? Only if you have time to check.  ::)
