v4 Static Routes - Come on D-Link
« on: September 15, 2013, 01:46:42 PM »

Seriously, I buy what you call an "advanced" router and I cannot even set a v4 static route to the LAN interface without hacking the page?  I can set v6 routes to LAN, why not v4 routes?

I bought this router as an "upgrade" and while it's nice I do not understand this at all.  One of my three criteria for purchasing this model was its ability to set static routes.  Didn't have a clue until I unboxed it just how difficult you made it.

Any chance this will be fixed on the new FW revision, or are we stuck with it?

Link>Welcome!
  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Be aware that some features may not be available do to these routers being designed and meant for home and small office platforms. Having such features usually isn't needed in these environments and more needed in larger business and corporate platforms are needed. If this is a the case, then asking D-Link support or sales beforehand before purchasing any router would be a good course of action to see weather or not what model router meets your "requirements". The DIR-868L is designed as is and works well for what it's intended use.

I've passed this along to D-Link for review. Please be patient while we wait for a response.

Hi FurryNutz,

Thanks for the reply.  I'm on HW A1, FW 1.02, in the US.  Just bought it today.

The following is meant with respect, so please don't read into it.  It is not directed at you personally.

The "feature not meant for home" does not hold water here.  The router clearly allows for the configuration of static routes, and the manual offers no criteria to when this will and will not work and with what interfaces.  Who delivers a router that can only set static routes on the WAN interface?  Who would even consider that was a limitation that needed checked on?  While setting static routes is an activity that only the advanced might use, this is an advanced router is it not?  I cannot see why someone thought they better include WAN facing static routes, but that's it.

Additionally, you can clearly set IPv6 static routes that are LAN facing.  Why the choice to allow static routes on the LAN interface with v6 and not v4?

Thankfully you can hack it, and it works.  It's just annoying and really seems like an oversight in functionality on this model.  It's a simple fix, obviously, since it's rather simple to work around.

In the end it's just my opinion, and I mean nothing other than to vent the frustration.  If it could be reviewed for the next FW update that would be outstanding.  Thanks for listening.

Well, I presume when it comes to specifications, requirements and designed, the use of "home" routers and some features will come into play and thus my statement does hold some water in this regard. I'm just saying that for some reason, this feature may have not been in the specs for this router as we have see this lack of LAN side routes on other router for the home class routers. I presume one idea and reason why D-Link may have skipped or not included this feature is the limited used of the average user needing this feature on a daily basis. All the routers I test, I have yet to use it and only have seen very few users asking about it.

Lets see what D-link says about it. I do hope that something can be done to add it if possible. This is a very good router and I do enjoy it and hope you will too.

Thanks FuzzyNuts, I agree, it's a nice router.  I'm liking it so far, and honestly as long as I can force the route I don't really care that much.  You can't quite do the "hack" the way other threads here explain it, but it's not too far off.  If I hadn't been able to work around it I would have returned the router.  Just seems weird to me, but I expect advanced features out of home routers that price at $170ish.  Doesn't mean my expectation is always valid, and I know that.

Agree on all your points, thank you for taking the time to respond.  I hope D-Link comes back with some good news on it.  While most users may not need that functionality the ones that do are quite restricted in its current form.  If the common user doesn't need static routes in D-Link's opinion maybe they should just whack the entire screen in lieu of its current implementation.  Honestly, I have trouble even saying that because if their view is that the common user doesn't need it then why include the ability to do it on the WAN interface.  That's one percent of the one percent of needs.

Additionally, if D-Link does intend on that behavior and keeps with the current implementation the Users Manual needs to be updated with that caveat in the applicable section.  Those who need static routes will look in the manual, see the section on them, and be quite disappointed when they buy the router and see it won't do what they want.  While only advanced users may need static routes almost none of that group will be putting them on the WAN interface.

Thanks and I'll keep an eye on the thread to see what comes back.  I appreciate the professional back-and-forth on this.

I've been frustrated by this as well. Would be very happy if anyone could shed some light on how the "hack" might work?

@Out, can you post some steps on how to mod the UI to allow for some Static Routes to be configured?

Hi everyone.  Apologies, but for whatever reason I just now, today August 10th 2014, got an e-mail notification from the forum that there was a response to this thread.  Weird.

Anyway, probably way OBE by now, but I used the process in this thread (Firebug).
