Author Topic: Port forwarding is not working, dropping matches on Games for Windows Live  (Read 19086 times)

I bought Super Street Fighter 4 a month ago, and it worked fine online (Games for Windows Live) for about 2 weeks. Occasional dropped connections. I decided to port forward, using my ipv4 address along with the ports that GFWL instructs to forward. Now every time I get into a match, I disconnect halfway through.

I've disabled my Firewall and AV, so its not them that's causing the problem.

Someone directed me to canyouseeme.org to see if my ports are forwarded, but I keep getting a message that says the connection timed out.

I've tried connecting to ethernet and I'm still experiencing drops in matches randomly (usually near the end of second round compared to beginning of it on wi-fi).

I still don't think my ports are properly forwarded, and I'm in desperate need of help because I can't even play online without DC'ing and it's really annoying

Also, I found this website http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ and its telling me that none of the ports that I forwarded on my default gateway are open.

Assistance please....

Edit: Just to expedite this whole troubleshooting process..

I'm on hardware A1 and firmware 1.01.

I am on Rogers ISP, which I believe is cable... the modem is a SMCD3GN, which to my knowledge is a Router/Modem but I've disabled the router function of it and connected the D-Link DIR-636L instead.

On ookla's speedtests, my UP is about 3 mbps, while my Down is 36 mbps.

    • Router Troubleshooting

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. For the DGL-5500, review this for Streamboost information and settings: Furry's DGL-5500 Review
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

Tried all of that. Ports are still not open... and I'm still DC'ing on Street Fighter.

It feels like a bot is talking to me, lol. Jk.

Like I posted in my initial post, hardware is A1. Firmware is 1.01.
I'm in Ontario, Canada.
I am wireless connected via Wifi but I still experience these problems when connected via Ethernet cable.
Yes.

Like I also said in my initial post, ISP is Rogers broadband, cable. The modem is a SMCD3GN.
Up/Down is 4/36 mbps.
It's probably 1500.

And you have ensured that you've properly bridged the ISP modem?

Try setting the WAN port speed on the 636L to 100Mb from Auto.

Ensure your port forward settings are correct. Testing PF needs to happen when you are actually using the ports or you'll get false negatives.

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Try a different ISP modem a swell.

There is newer FW as well:

Yes, it was done a year or two ago, back where I used to live. Connectivity dropped randomly but online gaming usually wasn't an issue, nor was LAN gaming (Minecraft server hosting and Starcraft game hosting). Port forwarding worked back there too.

I'll try that.

Do I check the PF settings while I'm in game with someone? I'm assuming that if I'm disconnecting though, the ports are still not forwarded... I'm running out of possibilities as to what else could be causing the disconnects.

And yes, I'm going to try updating FW right now.

If you've moved to a new area, possible there is ISP services issues in this new area.

Yes, you have check the ports while gaming. If your gaming and connecting for a time, I presume the PF is configured, and that your disconnections stem from something else. If it's happening on wired and wireless, i would presume this maybe an ISP service issue possibly.

Connecting to the game isn't an issue... its just before the match is finished, the game prematurely disconnects.

It may be an ISP issue too, but that's not really something within my power to fix...

Tried updating firmware and got wait 300 seconds... I did, and its still on 1.01. Strange.

Did you follow the FW update proccess sticky?  I highly recommend using that process. Please don't use Chrome for updating FW. Use IE or FF with any add-ons disabled.

I would recommend ensuring the router is correctly set up well for gaming. There are several gaming FAQs in the  FAQ Library

Once that's done and if your still getting pre-mature disconnections, I would only presume that there is a problem in the configuration of the router, or that the game services, ISP Modem or ISP services is causing the premature disconnection.

If it worked at your old location and isn't working in your new location, I would presume there is a problem on the ISP side of things.  :-\

Firmware 1.04 works for me with Xbox Live and GFWL. Firmware 1.03 "Fixed a UPnP Issue". So updating your router and just using UPnP should work without manual port forwarding.

I'm glad too since many router's still have broken port forwarding mechanisms.

I presume many routers don't have problems with PF, rather it's a configuration issue and how PF is implemented by the user and there network environment.

I'm glad too since many router's still have broken port forwarding mechanisms.

I should have specified UPnP. Manual port forwarding or triggering has always been hassle free. But the need of multiple devices to reach the same connectivity to a service is why UPnP is depended upon but doesn't always work.
