DIR-868L and comcast router DPC3939
« on: June 10, 2014, 09:57:50 AM »

Hi
I had no issues before we got X1 with comcast. My DIR-868L(firmware 1.07) worked 100%, but now we have a new comcast modem (DPC3939) and it is screwing up my entire network.

my two issues are:
The default gateway changed to 10.0.0.1 and now remote management doesn't work because the default gateway has changed to match comcasts default gateway. I am wondering if there is a way to change this and or fix this issue.

The shareport app doesn't work remotely and when im on a local network it tells me im on a remote network.
I used to get a blue wifi bar at the bottom but now its either green or pink telling me i have connection and bandwidth issues.

If anyone has any insight into fixing this or a link to a post somewhere else on the forums that can answer to these issues I would appreciate it!

Thanks!

Hi, I am not sure exactly what your setup is?  Which router is doing the DHCP?  Are you trying to bridge the new router and let your Dlink do the actual routing or what?  You can't let both try to do the routing....or you get a very messed up network.  A bit of clarification will help.

It looks like both my dlink router and my comcast modem are doing the DHCP, and it doesn't look like i can change my comcast modem to anything different because the internet connection is coming through it but i can change the default gateway.
From what you are saying I should be changing at least one of these to a different mode. I would appreciate it if you or someone else could tell me the best way to adjust my network so everything works the way its supposed to.

If there is any more information you need from me let me know and ill post everything i can.

Thanks!

Hi, Given you do not sound like a techy guy, probably the easiest way to go would be just to try and use your Dlink as an access point or AP.  The first thing you should try to do is go in to the DCP3939 and try to figure out the IP range.  This might be something like 10.0.0.2 to 10.0.0.254, that is the max anyway.  If it is smaller, fine, just pick an IP just outside of that but in the same range.  If they give you the entire range as above, just shorten it a bit by making it 10.0.0.2 to 10.0.0.250 and later assign 10.0.0.251 as the IP of your Dlink.  Then disable the wireless on the DCP3939.  That is about all you need to change on the DPC3939.  The next thing to do is basically turn your Dlink into just a wireless AP but you also should remember to assign the Dlink that IP from before 10.0.0.251 and then you turn off a bunch of stuff in the Dlink.

The above link will give you pretty clear instructions on how to do it.  Then just run an ethernet cord between a LAN port on the DPC3939 to a LAN port on the Dlink, not the WAN PORT.  Power everything up, and see if you can find and get to your networked stuff.  There are other ways to use the Dlink but I think this is the simplest and gets you the benefit of the dual band AC and range on the Dlink.  Good luck

Welcome!

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.
