DIR-655 Access Control Issues/Questions . . .
« on: March 10, 2015, 11:21:54 AM »

Hi - I'm a new proud owner of a d-link 655 and trying to manage access control for close to 20 devices ranging from young children to adults.  Seem to be having a problem setting up certain devices to never be blocked, while using the OTHER MACHINES option to block any machine without a policy at certain times. It seems that the times set to BLOCK ALL ACCESS for OTHER MACHINES just blocks every machine.  I'm using MAC addresses.  After doing a bit of research, TOMATO seemed to look more user friendly, but not sure if it's compatible with the 655 or not?  Also, any way you know of eliminating the feature to reset the router EVERY time I make a small change to a policy?  It'd be nice if I could make a bunch of changes, then reset the router, rather than waiting either 20 or 70 seconds every time I make a change . . . . I'm sure this is a common issue - can you direct me to more info on this?  Thanks.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

There is a limited amount of resources on D-Link routers so I'm not sure if you can manage up to 20 devices.

Router Access Control, Blocking, Web Filters and Scheduling FAQ
To set up scheduling:
1. Reserve device IP addresses ON the router under Setup/Networking.
2. Set up a schedule under Tools/Schedule on the routers web page. Customize your dates and times here.
3. Use Advanced/Access Control configured and apply the customized schedule to a policy and to the PC(s) or device(s) desired to be controlled.
4. Ensure Time is set correctly on the router. Tools/Time.

I do believe Setup/Networking/DNS Relay and or Setup/Internet/Manual/Advanced DNS Services need to be enabled along with configuring Reserved IP addresses, Scheduling, and Access Controls.

After making a change you get option to restart later, so you can pile changes into one reboot.
Also, no on the third party firmware, I also looked into that but the 655 chipset isn't one that can be flashed by other than dlink.
Sounds like you want to blocck kids online access times.

fzappa is correct there hasn't been any 3rd party FW for those model router. I believe the chip set isn't Broadcom.

Hi - thanks for looking to help me with this issue:

So, I have the Hardware Version B1 and firmware version 2.04NA.  I am located in the state of Oregon (USA).

I have attached a screen shot of my setup showing the option to turn off all Other Machines, with one machine (BentoPC) specified to NEVER Block All Access.  However, when I enable the policy to Block All Access on Other Machines, then ALL my machines turn off as well.  I've tested this fairly extensively; just wondering if this is supposed to work like I'm thinking it should.

Also, on my computer, I do NOT get the option to restart later - must be in a different firmware version?

Actually, it appears I don't know how to post a picture - can anyone help me with that as well?   thanks .  ..

Okay - here's a portion of my screen of policies.  Note the last two policies display my descriptions in the previous post.  With these policies, enabling the "All Other Off" policy blocks access to even the BentoPC.  Also, there are no other policies specified for BentoPC.  I included the network screen that verifies the MAC address of BentoPC.  Any ideas/suggestions?

I recommend you start with 1 or 2 devices only and set up 1 access control policy and test to make sure that the 1 or two devices work as you need them too. Then set up the rest. Just be aware that you might not be able to configure all 20 devices as these routers only support a limited number of configurations.

Okay - tried your suggestion . . . same result.  With the two policies shown, the BentoPC was blocked.

It says your filters is to block always...I presume it would be blocked in this configuration.

see. that might be where the problem is - I'm trying to use some kind of negative, reverse logic.  For BentoPC, I'm trying to say NEVER * Block All Access in hope that when I Block All Access on all Other Machines, it will recognize that BentoPC is NEVER supposed to be blocked?

Is the PC only needing to be blocked sometimes? If so, then try using the other option, I can't remember of the top of my head however I think there is a partial block or block some option.

The idea is that BentoPC is mom's PC - I never get block'ed - I am the block'er.  At some point, when I've had it, everyone else is, well, BLOCK'ed.  But not me  . . .
