My new DOCSIS 3.0 modem supports a Gigabit link. I use all CAT6 cables. For testing, I plugged the modem directly into my computer via the CAT6 Ethernet, and both recognized the Gigabit connection. When plugged into one of the DIR-655's LAN ports, I also get a Gigabit link. However, when plugged in to the WAN port (where I want it permanently), I only get a 100Mb link. Why is this? Is says on the DIR-655 product page that the WAN port exclusively supports Gigabit. I have tried multiple cables and manually setting the WAN port speed to Gigabit, but that setting causes the router not to properly connect with the modem (it doesn't work). This router is probably far out of warranty, as I've had it for years and years. I hope that my always reliable router (the best I've owned yet) is dying or was shipped defective (and I never knew).

so the problem is... you do not get a gigabite connection between the router and modem?? how do you know this?

on the 655 I believe the wan port is only 100mps. just the lan ports are gigabite

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
• Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
• What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? Link> Speed Testing Sites
• By-pass the main host router and check internet connection by connecting a wired LAN PC directly to the ISP modem to verify connection access and ISP speeds.
• Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
• Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
• WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

If this is causing the router to not be functional at 1000Mb, then either the ISP modem is not fully supporting of 1000Mb on it's WAN Port, LAN cable is bad or the 655 FW could be updated and tried again. I would try a different ISP modem that supports 1000Mb on the WAN port and see if it fails again. IF not, then you'll know that your ISP modem is the culprit.

• My modem has a light that shows it. Green means 100 and Blue means Gigabit. I know that it works because I get blue when plugged in directly to my computer. My computer also shows a Gigabit link.
• It says under the specs tab of this page that it has a Gigabit Wan port. There is also an option on it to force the WAN port to Gigabit, but it doesn't work. http://us.dlink.com/products/connect/wireless-n-gigabit-router/

• Ubee DDM352. You can see that it supports Gigabit. I am already very sure that it supports Gigabit and my ISP does too. It worked on my computer (with the ethernet cable going directly from the modem to my computer's Intel NIC). It says it has Gigabit on its product page (linked) too.

• I technically get 100Mb up and 5Mb down, but the modem is actually very nice and can handle more much than that (I think up to 300 down). TWC actually puts in about 112-120 down, which is why I want the Gigabit.
• I already said in the first post that I bypassed it and ran it directly to my computer.
• I already said that I tried multiple cables (which are all CAT6).
• I'm pretty sure its 1500 MTU. The internet works fine, it's just that I don't have a Gigabit link from the modem to router.
• I already tried this. If I set it manually to Gigabit then the router doesn't see the modem (no connection).

I also updated the firmware to 1.37NA the other day, but even after trying the manual setting again, it still doesn't work.

Do you have a different modem or can you take the router to a different location with a different modem, say a friend, family or neighbor to see if it works there, if they have a Gb supporting modem. It's possible that the 655 maybe not compatible with that particular brand of model or faulty. Would need to test with different modem though.

I'll connect my Rev A this evening after work and see what I find out.

Nobody I know has a beefy modem like mine. TWC gives the appropriate modem for internet speed. If you have less than 100 plan, then they give you the Motorola DOCSIS 2.0 SurfBoard modems, which definitely don't support Gigabit. The highest speed plan is normally very expensive, but I complained when they changed their prices and didn't update my speed accordingly.

If there were a way to emulate a modem on a computer (maybe with the x86 build of OpenWRT?) I could run my computer as a fake Gigabit modem and test it, but as I write this I realize how difficult that would be.

I just tested my A3 v1.11 and it connects at 1Gb LAN speeds to my Motorola SB 6180.


I presume that maybe your 655 maybe faulty or not compatible with your ISP modem...I leaning towards it being an incompatibility.

I'd like an answer to this as well.  Technically the port may be gigabit, but maybe the processor isn't fast enough to actually handle it.  I have a 1GB fiber optic connection;  there's a box outside where the cable comes in, and then Ethernet cabling runs from there into my house which is connected to the WAN on this router.  Plugging a laptop into the WAN cable it shows 1GB connection and I get 500+ MB up and down on speed tests (probably would be faster except for the laptop is old).  But the same test with the router I'm unable to get above 130mbs. 

I have the rev B version of this router with the latest (from 2013) firmware.

The WAN port speed is supporting of 1Gb connection rates between the modem and router only. This Is the physical connection between the two, and not actually the data throughput of speed from the ISP.


Is Traffic Shaping and QoS enabled on the router?

I have the same issue as OP and ajj3085.  We just got a speed increase from Time Warner Cable to 300Mbps down, 20Mbps up.  When I connect my laptop directly to the cable modem (Arris SB6183), I consistently see speeds above this, roughly 350Mbps down on average. When I connect my DIR-655 to the cable modem and my laptop to the DIR-655 (using only cat6 cables new from packaging and with nothing else connected to the DIR-655), I am unable to exceed 140Mbps, and often see speeds less than 80Mbps.

Give that the cable modem and link is clearly capable of supporting greater throughput, I have to conclude that this router is the bottleneck.  Is there a workaround for this?  If not, I'm curious what the point is of advertising a Gigabit WAN port if the device is effectively capped at throughput that barely exceeds 100Mbps?

Time Warner Cable.  300Maxx service confirmed by testing directly connected to the cable modem (speeds consistently in excess of 350Mbps).

Note that I won't be able to do much more in the way of troubleshooting, since I am replacing the router with a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 today.  Thanks for your help.

This maybe a limitation of the router when QoS is enabled.
