DIR 655 dropping connection if I put in password
« on: June 27, 2017, 08:29:29 AM »

Hello everyone,

I have a very odd problem. This morning my DIR 655 randomly started dropping all wireless connections. It would connect for 2 seconds then drop, then reconnect then drop and so on. I reset the router and it worked no problem while the connection was open. The moment I logged in to change my wi-fi password and name (Status-->Wireless Settings-->Manual wireless setup) it would start dropping the connection again.

If I reset the router and leave the connection open it works for hours no problem till I change the password. Any ideas on what may be the culprit?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Try a LAN wired PC to the router and change the wifi settings on this PC. Then connect one of your wireless devices to the router.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?

What wireless modes are you using? Try single mode N only.
What security modes are you using? Try WPA2 and AES only.

Router version: A4
Router firmware version: 1.37NA
Region: Shipped from Canada
ISP: Cable

I tried all your suggestion but nothing seems to work. The router also stopped working in open mode about 2 hours ago. It is very difficult to change the settings on the routers page as it  loses the connection every 5 seconds both wired and  wireless.
I managed to change them by rushing but no change in functionality.

I feel should mention that i have owned this router for close to 7 years. Do you that it has run its course?

Maybe. Does the router work ok if you turn OFF the wireless radio? If so, one suggestion, you can keep the router going if you still want to use it and connect up a wireless AP via LAN wire to the back of the 655 router. Think of it as a wireless upgrade. Still use the 655 as a router for wired connections, and have a external wireless AP connected to it. I've done this on occasion when testing these older router.

You might try downloading the last FW file. Factory reset, manually send the FW file using IE11 or FF then factory reset and test again.

If a factory reset has been done or FW was reloaded and you still experience this issue, the wifi maybe going out on it.  :-\

Both Ethernet and wireless are dropping? Sounds like the router is bad.

Try a firmware recovery using an Ethernet connection. Download the latest firmware for your router. Then, holding in the reset button, unplug the power for 10 seconds and then plug it back in while still holding the reset button in. Release after about 10 seconds. Let the router reboot.

Log in to the router (192.168.0.1) and a firmware recovery screen should appear. Browse to the firmware file and load the firmware.

If this doesn't work, there is definitely a hardware issue. Is the router hotter than normal?

I believe Rev As don't support the recovery feature...if I'm not mistaken. I could be incorrect.  ::)

Hmmm. It doesn't hurt to try.

Here is an old thread on it --> http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=44909.0

Ya, just tried on my A3, doesn't go into Recover mode after holding in the reset button.  :-[
If I remember correctly, recovery didn't come in till Rev B.

I believe you are correct.

Well, I would try resetting it, and then with an Ethernet connection log in (skip the wizard) and go directly to the firmware page and update the firmware. Don't worry about configuring anything. Once the firmware is updated, try configuring the router and see if it can maintain connectivity.

Tried all suggestions in the thread, after the factory reboot and FW install it will broadcast a signal, however, it will drop every few seconds both wireless and wired. I think it truly is dead. Didn't even notice we were attached to the damn thing till now (still looks brand new).

Any recommendations on another quality router like the Dir-655 for another 7 year (maybe more) run?

Many thanks for your help guys, much appreciated.

Well you could always find another 655 on ebay or amazon. LOL

Find you a DIR-868L or 866L, the 866L is the last model with the old UI.

Might give the new DIR-878 a test run. All routers DIR-87x, 88x and 89x have to new UI as seen here:

UPDATE! So I bought another Dir-655  ;D. Lo and Behold it wont connect either! I phoned up the ISP and after trying to troubleshoot over the phone they finally decided to send someone over to check it out. The guy fiddles with it then says he thinks the modem is busted, he goes back to his truck and returns with a hulking monstrosity (12 x 8 Inches) that is my new "modem/router". He hooks it up and everything works no problem! ;D ;D

The moment he left i hooked up my Dir-655 reconfigured my settings etc and Im all in the clear now! Problem is i have an extra Dir-655, im thinking about setting it up as an access point downstairs. Is that possible? also can it serve as Access Point/Ethernet Switch as I have a PC which supports only wired connections + various mobile devices. Thanks guys!

Glad you got it figured out and it wasn't the DIR router.

Yes you can add additional APs by following this:
Turning a router into an AP.

If your modem is being used as the main host router, you can still use the 1st DIR router as a router if you want to. Use the DMZ on the ISP modem/router and input the IP address the DIR router gets from the modem in to this DMZ. Or use them both as APs.  ;)
