Position of antenna when mounted flat on wall
« on: January 07, 2008, 02:13:27 AM »

My dir-655 is mounted on the wall (using the recessed mount holes on the back of the unit). The wall in question is on the front wall (inside, obviously) of a three storey house and its in a room on the middle floor.

What would people think to be the optimal orientation of each antenna?

Realise there might not be a definitive answer but would appreciate some thoughts.

Make sure that the antenna is positioned for best reception by using the software signal strength tools included with your product DIR-655.

The best position is a

Let's begin with some terminology the back of the router forming your X axis.  This would make the side of the router the Y axis.  And finally the D-Link logo on top would be the Z axis if extended along it's facing.

My guess would be to put the antennae parallel to the wall with them at 45, 90, and 135 degrees (π/4, π/2, 3π/4 radians).  I would then bring the middle antenna forward by 90 degrees (π/2 radians), and the last antennae (from either left or right) forward along the Z axis by 45 degrees (π/4 radians).

Wow that was confusing, I may take pictures later if I get bored.

Rara - I really have followed that advice so tell me now if you were just mucking about!  :-\

I can't be pfaffed to take a photo but here's a description.

Router lies on wall.
Front side down.
Left antenna is parallel to wall but 45 degrees to the horizontal (facing left)
Centre antenna is exactly perpendicular to the wall, facing you as you look at it.
Right antenna is same as left antenna but also at 45 to the vertical (facing right).

I wasn't mucking at all, though I am curious what kind of experience your having with that set-up.

I actually took pictures yesterday, but the forum didn't want me to attach them so I gave up.  See how hard that is to describe!

I also have a related but different setup to try if you still want to experiment.  This one is listed with the axis and degree of rotation for each antenna.

Left: X axis 180 degrees (π radians), Y axis 0 degrees (0 radians),  Z axis 90 degrees (π/2 radians)
Middle: X axis 90 degrees (π/2 radians), Y axis 0 degrees (0 radians), Z axis 0 degrees (0 radians)
Right: X axis 45 degrees (π/4 radians), Y axis 45 degrees (π/4 radians), Z axis 45 degrees (π/4 radians)

I am sure an RF engineer would find a better way of doing things, however for the time being that should maximize potential.

<edit> I swear I spell check these things before I post them, It's not my fault ti is a valid word!</edit>

Thanks. Will experiment with this for today and then try yours.

I didn't sound very grateful in my initial post back to you. Sorry. I am. Thanks!

Can anyone post a photo for instructions?

Also, I want to know the orientation when using with the black stand.

This how mine is on the wall and pointing up. By-the-way you don't want the power cords and LAN cables touch the ANTs. Try to isolate them as much as possible.

tipster, you need to angle the outside antenna. You'll improve wireless performance.

That's access point though what makes up the ANT pretty much the same in the DIR-655 but for what it's worth might not have the same dBi but still up down to the left and right still don't see much of a difference. So it's been up almost a year.
