Title: When will we get a new firmware update?
Post by: coxwain on February 10, 2010, 07:26:22 AM
I have had my unit over 1 year and I havent seen any significant firmware upgrade since 1.06

When will we see an update that is official?

Clearly this product is not supported well post sale!

Well, 1.07 is a released version , and 1.08 will soon be released.

Out of curiosity - why do you equate the lack of "significant firmware upgrade(s)" with "post sale support".

For the sake of discussion - let's say a firm were to introduce a NAS, with a well developed stable, bugfree operating system (assuming such a thing were possible), why should they offer any "upgrade" whatsoever?

For the sake of discussion - let's say a firm were to introduce a NAS, with a well developed stable, reasonably bugfree operating system (assuming such a thing were possible), they might offer firmware updates to correct any bugs that were discovered, but why should they offer any firmware "upgrade" whatsoever?

When you bought the DNS-323, you knew what features D-Link advertised it as having, what makes you think you are entitled to more?

Now - to discuss post sale support - for the most part I've had very few reasons to contact D-Link's tech support team, and on those few occasions it has been done by email, and I find them courteous and responsive and if I might say so, a lot more prompt than those of their competitors whom I have had the need to contact.  In fact, the only network equipment manufacturer who has been more prompt & helpful than D-Link has been Cisco (and I don't mean Linksys by Cisco).

Mind you - I'm not giving D-Link a clear pass here - this thing still has bugs that I think should have been fixed years ago - but - my point is, you're not entitled to upgrades, and post sale support is in no way linked to said upgrades.

In addition, although there are things that I'd like to see changed, the unit performs the function it's advertised to do. :)
Title: Re: When will we get a new firmware update?
Post by: klein on February 10, 2010, 09:57:43 AM
hey gunrunner, you mention in your last post that the unit performs the functions it's advertised to do.  I purchased this strictly for 1 central location for all my pictures, music and movies for my network.  i had it set up with 2 separate volumes and wanted disk 2 to backup disk 1 with incremental backups since there wasn't much change on a daily basis.  this does not work and has been reported many times so it doesn't work as advertised.

other annoyances such as the upnp server, yes it does work, but to have to wait hours sometimes for something to show up on the ps3 is crazy when other products can have it there in 2-3 min, and you normally have to hit manual refresh on the 323 to get it up there ...

so having this said that's why people are getting frustrated with this device, i love the price point of it and if it did exactly as advertised then it wouldn't a problem

D-Link should have the resources to put out a firmware quicker then over a year.  In the meantime i have purchased another NAS from a competitor back in August and have already seen 2 firmware updates since then, this to address bug fixes and with enhancements

we were also told it was going to be in released in july 2009, sure we can't for see issues with the firmware right away but we are now 7 months later and Dlink still doesn't have the problems sorted out ... just doesn't seem like a lot of support for the advertised features, never mind the enhancements, why don't they stop working on the shareport package that is supposed to be released with 1.08 and get the other stuff working first ... i love the idea of the shareport by the way, it will make the device a lot better but again not an original advertised feature as to why i purchased the unit

just my thoughts

hey gunrunner, just out of curiosity, i don't believe you work for Dlink so you won't know what is going on behind the scenes but what does soon mean to you, you mention that 1.08 will be released soon, so within a few days, weeks, months, etc?

1.08 has already been approved as final. So....soon. When all ECN's are released and the full 1.08 package is ready to go it will be uploaded to the site.

Hey D-Link Multimedia ... thanks for the update, but again soon, what does that mean?  Also I am not sure if it was you or ECF that quoted July 2009 but either way you both represent D-Link and it is 7 months later so only time will tell i guess ...

To Klein, yes it was me. We had some development set backs which took way longer than expected.

To Aibo,

Yes I am actually planning to release a beta firmware and addon tomorrow adding our new Cloud Backup service. It is the exact same code as 1.08 final with the addition of the Online backup. Beyond that addition we will be focusing most of our efforts at updating our other 2 boxes and other development efforts.

I find it impressive that DLink staff are here to answer questions and give us some idea of what to expect on the firmware front.
Overall am quite happy with my DNS-323, and aside from the nightmares of early days with 2nd drive install wiping 1st drive, which I think the newer firmware addresses, I can't complain at all.
The device is stable, solid and does not heat up.
With funplug you can even control fan better and keep device sleeping when not in use more frequently.

Lots to love here, keep up the good work. (I have no connection with nor own stock in d-link! Just have 2-3 devices)

I'm curious about this statement.  Exactly how does fun_plug fix hibernation?

In the beta section, they're talking about it being posted on the D-Link web site on Monday, this will be the 1.08 final release.

Is this new FW release delayed??

As stated in another thread, the Beta 1.09 went up yesterday offering a trial of Cloud Backup. 1.08 package was not ready until late in the day when the web dev team had already left and since we do not post official firmwares on fridays (official policy), it will be live monday.

Thanks D-Link Multimedia

question, any chance of losing data on hard drives when updating firmware? Or can i remove the hard drive (drives are standard) update firmware and then install drives, what do you recomend

I have never seen a firmware update wipe drives on any of our devices. If you want to take precaution you can easily pop out the drives and update the firmware however it is not needed.

Slight correction to my release date on 1.08, it will be Tuesday as D-Link US will not be in office Monday to celebrate so a momentous holiday.

You can read more below.  Obviously you need funplug first, then you add the fan hack scripts

Hibernation is NOT the fan control, it's spinning down the drives.

Gunnrunner. 1.07 is hardly an update, chAnglog hitatchi drive support...

Fordam we have had this discussion before
I want the unit to do as advertised, nothing more than that, or change your advertising
I bought it to work with my ps3 and am for Ed to use ps3 media server as it is far superior to. Thedns323
for file server abity
the dns works great as a fill extention but that is not the only thi g it is put out there to do

we should get updates to firmware everymonth for items that don't work properly that are supposed to

updates for additional features are nice but seriously just get this thing working the way it is supposed to work

firmware updates recommend you backup and for
at the drives so thAt the full effect of the upgrade is installed

it is foolish to install beta drivers on core backup data

Out of curiosity - why do you equate the lack of "significant firmware upgrade(s)" with "post sale support".

You do get at least one a year and more frequent intervals may actually be an indicator of a bad product indicating serious issues that need to be addressed.
Title: Re: When will we get a new firmware update?
Post by: coxwain on February 17, 2010, 03:59:57 AM
The frequency of firmware updates show the commitment to their product
the fact that they can't clear up existing issues that are advertised to be working is a real issue
initially I thought this was a great product because of the feature list but if they don't work then the product is useless

I compared the 1.08 release beta to the 1.09b1 version and they're identical binary files.  Can you confirm this, I believe this was mentioned before here?

Since I have that installed, doesn't seem I should have to load it again.

Glad to see
do the drives need to be reformated and backed up?

If you do the reformat first then there's no need for the backup since the data will no longer be there.

The source of this information should be the release notes, which do not mention a reformat, so it should be safe to assume that one is not required (and I did not need to do one when running the beta), provided you choose to continue using an ext2 file system.  1.08 reintroduces the ext3 file system as an option, and if you wish to go that route, then a reformat IS required, the backup is optional, but as mentioned above, if you don't do it, you will have no data on the drive.

For what it's worth - if the data is of any value - then you do need to back it up, wether or not you're planning a reformat or a firmware upgrade.

Really? I doubt this:

02/17/2010 11:50      7,960,008 dns323_firmware_108.zip
02/11/2010 09:46      6,728,622 dns323_fw_109b01_beta.zip

Even after unpacking there is still a 750KB difference in size - did I miss something here?

This is the link where I downloaded the firmware, it's actually 1.08b9, I mis-spoke: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=9897.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=9897.0)

The file is identical to the released 1.08.  The actual 1.09 I suspect is different, since it included that on-line backup. :)

Can someone explain the new features?

¤ Add Support for EXT3. is this still a Linux filesystem?
¤ Supports D-Link’s DNS-323 Yahoo! Widget. what is this?

¤ Support for NFS (as a server) added via APKG modules. what is this?

Also, for the BT Client, I have briefly fooled around with it but found it limited. Does it have a scheduler somewhere? Right now, I use my main desktop PC but itson a schedule to open begin connections (downloading/uploading) from midnight to 8:00am 7 days a week. I only have 1.5Mbs internet so bandwidth during the day is crucial to my household. Does the DNS-323 BT Client have this type of a scheduler, similar to uTorent?

And add    what is noip ?

D-Link - how about some explanations?
Reluctant to install to find out.  In the past needed a reformat to get bit-torrent install off my hard disc.

No-IP is another dynamic DNS forwarding service, just like DynDNS.

Firefly is a media server: http://www.fireflymediaserver.org/

Maybe you guys should learn to use Google, it's pretty easy. ;)

I am from Singapore, and I don't see anything about 1.08 in the product details / support page there either.
