Any Chance of an updated HD Compatibility list with user feedback similar to the DNS-323 pages.?

Good idea. I'll establish a new thread in a day or so.  ;)

It would be nice if the new firmare works with OSX Lion and the netatalk 2.2.x to enable a working itunes server and time maschine backup.

Not sure if this is a feature already or not, the lights that represent the drive bays on the OLED, if a drive fails the light for the drive in the bay should blink.

There should be an option for the end user to change the display name in the OLED from DNS-345 to something like their device name such as NAS-SR-1000 as an example.

iSCSI support which complete the functionality of the DNS-345 as it has everything else.

We'll have to wait to see what happens when/if a HDD fails. . .

This would require a hardware change, while this list only addresses firmware requests.

Would be nice if there were two modes for NIC availability, single and dual mode.

Single mode would allow someone to connect LAN1 to Network A and connect LAN2 to Network B, this is actually an old method.

Dual NIC mode would be teaming, when this mode is in use a single virtual NIC would be created that shows up in the DHCP server; this virtual NIC would manage the two NICs depending on which teaming mode is selected. As it currently stands the teaming has both NICs getting an IP address from the DHCP server making true load balancing impossible to achieve.

Although conceptually this sounds like a great idea, I think the solution extends substantially beyond a firmware update. Wouldn't this solution require a client-side software solution as well?  ???

Sorry why would iSCSI require a hardware change? Openfiler a free NAS application written in *nix offers iSCSI support on your local server hardware without requiring you to buy anything special as an example. Windows 2008/7 supports iSCSI without requiring any special hardware. Your competitors offer iSCSI with their products, I am sure they aren't using anything special to achieve this. :)

What? Why do you think that you would require software on the client side? You should really sit down with a Windows server that has two Broadcom or Intel NICs and see how "true" teaming works, or set up the server to work on two different networks. You'll see it has nothing to do with the clients accessing it..

You're 100% correct, I was reading through your post too quickly and didn't see the "i" in iSCSI.  :-[

I was running v1.01 of the firmware and noticed that when you schedule the DNS-345 to turn itself on at 8am, it actually turns itself on at 8pm.

I have just upgraded to v1.01b09 (provided by tech support Australia) and am yet to test if this issue still occurs... but it's not really that big a deal.

This v1.01b09 has solved all my speed issues - so I am very happy with the result.

Needs a performance boost. With fw 1.01 too transfer rate (r&w) seems terribly too slow in comparison with other brand solution...

Wait until the next version of the firmware comes. You will be overjoyed like I am. :)

Yeah, that issue is still there with the new v1.01b09 firmware.

I have reason to believe that the D-Link Australia firmware version 1.01b09 has the same bug fixes and functionality as the current USA firmware version 1.01: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50474.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50474.0)

I moved the bottom two replies to an independent thread: DNS-345 - Transfer Rate Issue (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50560.msg187242#msg187242)

Well, for the first two or three days after upgrading to this v1.01b09 firmware, things were running at full speed and I was happy. Sadly, after that, it has gone back to being slow again. :(
I am experiencing much slower speeds than Anvi, above. I'm talking KB/s. Not MB/s.

Transfer rates need to be fixed.. I'm getting 45MB/s peak transfer rate when moving files on local network to the DNS-345.

8GB file transfer:
LAN1 35MB/s peak write
LAN1+LAN2 45MB/s peak write

Sadly average rates are a little bit lower.. HDDs can't be the bottleneck here as each of them are able to read/write 100-130MB/s.

If a user uses the wrong version of firmware on their device the device should report some kind message that the firmware they are using is not for their device.

I didn't realize until after trying the US firmware on my Canadian device and it did nothing, didn't update just had the spinning colorful wheel on the screen and the message to now power down or turn off my NAS. After 20 minutes of nothing and being able to logon to the NAS through another session I cancelled out. I noticed the Canadian site finally got updated and the firmware was posted there; there is a slight difference in the file size between the USA and Canadian firmwares even though they are same version. The Canadian version installed without any issues and fairly quickly too.

Hopefully this will save someone else some time & frustration.

I am deploying a new-smelling DNS345 to do backups of several remote servers. All have current rsync.conf files that have worked swimmingly for quite a while.

The DNS345 failed out with an 'RSync Test failed' while trying to configure the backup. The server log at the other end said 'Password failure'.

It turns out that the DNS345 doesn't/can't send a long password. The existing password was 17 characters. One shortened down to 8, all worked well.

A couple more backup requests (I acquired this unit primarily to perform network backups so pardon my tunnel vision):

1. Add backup status to the notifications and the log. AFAIK, there is no easy way to assess detailed backup status, success, or failure. Just the --stats output from rsync would be very useful. Email in the case of failure would be a boon.

2. Provide finer grain backup scheduling. I have  need to schedule some backups to run every half hour or so. Again, AFAIK, daily is as fine as it gets. I could theoretically add a bunch more jobs but that would get unnecessarily messy.

3. Assuming I haven't missed something, provision for a graceful way of stopping a running backup would be nice.

I'm fairly new to the DNS345 and if I'm missing something obvious, please point me in the right direction. I appreciate the effort administrators put into this forum and will buy them all beer as opportunity presents.

FYI - All of the ShareCenter series seem to suffer from the same backup limitation (i.e. daily, weekly, monthly)

UPnP AV Server builds media library very slowly.

-Please add an option to choose specific folders for the media server. Currently it seems to scan the entire volume.
-2TB worth of video files takes about 10 hours to build into a library. This seems extreme.

Please add more options for fan control
-Manual value inputs would be best
-Currently these 40mm jet engines generate a lot of noise even when my HDDs are at 35°C / 95°F to 40°C / 104°F. I'm currently using AUTO "Off/Low/High". The only manual option available is "Always On High".. really?
- I'd love to be able to drop the RPM so low that I can't hear them spinning.

I would like to see a rsync style --delete option in the local to local backup scheduler.  This way if your keeping backups and you delete a file on your main copy, you also have the option to delete it in the backup.

Hi,

Could we get MySql installed on the 345 fw please?

Thanks
MySQL is already available since Firmware 1.0.1 - As far as i know it already was available since 1.0.0
It is installed by default because the webinterface requires MySQL. Just install phpMyAdmin and you can connect to the local MySQL server!

System Status > Resource Monitor > Bandwidth:
  • Graphs need to scale depending of the current connection speed (10/100/1000 Mbps). Currently it's fixed to 100 Mbps
  • Legend of these graphs says MB/s while it should be Mbit/s
  • Graphs show wrong information (see screenshot below). 3710.00 can't be anything of MByte/s, KByte/s (= 3,71 MByte/s), Mbit/s (= 463,75 MByte/s) or Kbit/s (= 0,46375 MByte/s)
  • Help on the right also says MB/s

I also like the RSYNC style DRY RUN option.  Of course this would require a LOG FILE that could be specified so you could make sure the DRY RUN option was working.  Without the dry run option you can really mess up the files if your not careful (and if it's 2T worth of data this can be several days worth of repair).  The log file comes in handy for other things as well, I make a separate log file for each day of the week.  Below is a example of my RSYNC file;

rsync -aiH8 --stats --delete "/mnt/HD/HD_a2/Data Backup" "/mnt/HD/HD_b2" >/mnt/HD/HD_a2/rsynclog/rsync.last$(date "+%u").log

of course adding the -n option would add the dry run.

So I'm suggesting adding a DRY RUN options and a LOG FILE option with it keeping at least the last 7 logs.

I can validate that the software has been around for some time undergoing a battery of internal QA testing prior to release. I can't say whether the time stamp reflects the actual build date or why the two dates you're referencing aren't in sync.  :-\  ???  :-\

Please add a watchdog process to make sure any software hangs or lockups don't disable the NAS.

I recently did a remote reboot and the NAS just locked up with NO FAN! Needless to say, I came back on site and the unit was extremely hot, luckily there was no damage. Typically the processor should have a hardware watchdog facility built in, if not then either a software watchdog or just default the fan speed to high on any system change before its set and immediately change it back on confirmation. This would at least guarantee the unit is getting some airflow in the event the system locks up.

Hi Community,

Just purchased a DNS-345 and its a great device!

How about the following items for the wishlist.

- AirPrint support for USB Printer (not sure if that's technically even possible)
- Usenet Download Client
- Ability to rename or set Volume names instead of Volume_1 and Volume_2
- TFTP Server

Cheers!

Just purchased a DNS 345 for myself after getting one for my brother in law... but for me I would love to see NTFS support (or Alt-F for the DNS 345) so I can just put NTFS formatted drives in without having to reformat and transfer information.

I'll add this but I can assure you it will never come to fruition. The entire D-Link ShareCenter product line is based on the Linux operating system and relies on EXT for all HDD formatting/configuration.

Alt-F would be nice, but that's up to third party developers to build.  ;)

Hi JL, I appreciate what you're saying but what D-Link needs to understand is that a very large portion of their customers are using this NAS with a Windows based operating system (which equals poor Ext support). I spent several days transferring data from my NTFS formatted hard drives across the LAN to the NAS.

Think how much more desirable the D-Link products would be if you could just drop in a NTFS formatted HDD without having to reformat it, or juggle large drives (3-4 TB), or having to buy additional HDDs to perform the juggling act.

Even though I bought one of these for my brother in law first with different requirements, I was actually looking at other manufacturers myself because the D-Link lacked this NTFS support functionality. I ultimately decided to take one on the chin for the sake of family, so we were both using the same hardware and I would only have to learn how to support one model instead of two.

Not everyone is going to be in that boat, and will make a decision that supports them based upon their needs. Not trying to be funny but D-Link needs to think about their customer base on this one. The same way Apple makes up 3% of the PC market but everyone thinks the world revolves around them, truth is they are the minority and apps should be based around the majority not the minority (i.e. Android not IOS).

I fully understand where you are coming from (as I am in the same boat), but to achieve this objective D-Link would have to substantially re-engineer the firmware for the entire ShareCenter product line which is all based on the same code.  I believe D-Link has done a fair job of providing cross-platform interoperability through it's web Interface and add-ons. Despite your misgivings, Linux is a highly stable, extensible operating system, that is both independently maintained and not tied to Microsoft. Another point to raise is that at this price point, D-Link does provide an exception value when it comes to price to performance/functionality compared to other more expensive alternatives.

I have neither a problem with Linux or Ext, but unfortunately MS provides very poor support for Ext to make the journey a painless one (if MS did support Ext I would format drives to it, and there wouldn't be a problem) Perhaps we can convince MS to support Ext better ;) (but then again they don't even support NTFS all that well, with their excruciating "Read Only" messages every time you want to read a drive).

Anyway keep up the good work :D

To complete the iSCSI support two things needs to be addressed.

1. NIC team - it should be work based on the industry standards.
2. MTU - it should be able to support jumbo frames, it's best practice in the industry to use Jumbo frames on iSCSI systems.

Something I have just discovered after a test, the notification email Username is limited to just 31 characters, this limit needs either increasing (63 at least), or removing altogether. You can't impose restrictions on an email system, that normally doesn't have restrictions. One of my email addresses is 35 characters long, and 25 characters of that are the @ and the domain name.
