So is the new Gb switch now exhibiting the same slow down on the NAS?

I just power cycled the switch and that seemed to help (like I've done with the router in the past).  It seems if you want to get decent speeds over a Gig LAN you need to push the MTU way up.  The only way to get that to work in my case is between the PC and the router.  My switch is not a managed switch.  But I'm guessing if I mess with the MTU on the router that would screw up things on the WAN side.

There a link to this boxee app? I should have looked at the Status page on the router to see if there was some info on the connection. I only noticed that BD files seem to have a hard time playing seamlessly on 2.4Ghz then wired. Would be interesting to see the actual connection speed. I presume it should be connecting at 130-170Mb on N right?  Ya, Theres been a few updates for boxee.

Well, with WiFi the throughput seems to be have of the connection speed.  Unless you are getting that speed via your CAT6(e) to your router. 

The SpeedTest app looks to have been dropped. Whenever an app is added it should show up on your app list. Just be sure to choose ALL so you can see all the apps. Anyway, to get around this I use the Boxee Browser and to to Speedtest.net and use their speedtest.  Then you can set it as a favorite for later use again.  I just tested mine and I got 22.5Mpbs down and 3.87Mbps up via Boxee -> WiFi Router -> WAN.

I'll give that a go and see what I'm getting on 2.4Ghz. I now wired is great, hehe. Boxee been pretty good though for streamin.

My speeds with Comcast are 22Mb down and 4Mb up for what I'm paying.  So with my WiFi test to the Boxee I'm happy.  Curious of actual throughput.

Think I'm going to order some Cat6 cables off of Monoprice.com.

I will. I got 50 down and 2 up. Will see if my 4500 set in AP mode will effect this or not. My 825 is at the opposite end of the house so I have the boxee close to the 4500, the thats connected to a switch next to it in the living room then off to the 825 in the office.

Ya, I think CAT6 is really good. Very stable. I can't wait to start running CAT 6 in the new addition.

Well I did a test the other night using boxee connected to the DGL-4500 set up in AP mode using single mode N at 2.4Ghz. First test came back very low speeds, 7Mb and 2Mb up. I tried a 2nd time and this time the speed was more closer to 50Mb down, around 37Mb. I think it might have been due to the time of evening that the speedtest was slower than expected. Ping times were around 60. Not great but I think for watching netflix and streaming stuff via apps on there, probably not a major concern. I watched a movie after I was done. No problems.

I did notice this, I had my MacBook Pro connected wired and had the DGL-4500 wireless status page open monitoring the connection. I notice that the connection for boxee would only get 65Mb, it would never connect at anything faster. Initially it connected at 35Mb and that I think was because I had my Mac Book on wireless as well so I turned that off and connected wired. After that the boxee connected at 65Mb and no more. I need to see if I can figure out if the boxee will connect at any higher speed on the 825 however thats down the hallway and in the office. The boxee and 4500 are about 7 feet apart in the same room.

So you are saying you connected your MacBook Pro to the ethernet port on the back of the Boxee to see what speed it would connect at?  It's supposed to be a 10/100 Nic.

No I had the MBP connect to the switch were also the Boxee and 4500 were all connected too. Isn't the boxee a Gb NIC?

No 10/100.  I was hoping the same but 10/100 should work fine for what you need to run it.

I think it's trickier streaming HD movies off of a NAS than it is something like VUDU.  I've done VUDU at 1080P and it's great.  I find with the NAS that it looks like the transfer rates probably wouldn't be enough to do BD movies.  I've heard complaints from others to.  But I see the NAS units are getting faster as Netgear has one now with 1Gig of RAM and a dual core Atom CPU.  Said to get 70MB/s.

I agree man. I think raw BD movies are too big and bulky for connections under 100Mb and probably anything under 130Mb. Need the bigger pipe to carry the big stuff I guess. Am curious why the boxee only connected at 65Mb instead of 130Mb though.

Hmm... so that was a WiFi connection between your laptop and the Boxee you were referring to that you got 65Mb?  If so only half of that is actually throughput.

PCs are tricky.  There are all of these theoretical speeds/rates that are not real world.  USB, WiFi, Ethernet, PCI boards and it goes on.  Bottlenecks and other things are culprits.  Plus, good software drivers and so on.

Edit:  Curious... do you know if you used mixed cable types (Cat 5, 5e, 6) that the speeds will only work as the slowest cable?  I know with WiFi it's speed is only as good as the slowest device.  I understand that, say, you have 802.11b enabled and someone is using that then everyone else will run at the 802.11b speed via WiFi.  Wondering if the same thing applies to cables.

No the connect was between the Boxee and the 4500 router setup as an AP. I was using wired on my LT and monitoring the Status page on the 4500 and looking at the connection speed it was reporting while the boxee was connected to the 4500 in single mode N @ 2.4Ghz.

As for cableing, it's been my experience that regardless of cable type, you'll get the same connection speeds across each one. Depending on how well they are may of course. However each one has different distance travel length limitations, CAT 6 being the longest for one single run of cable so far with out having to amplify. CAT 7 goes even farther.

So if I happen to have Cat5 and Cat5e cables all cables with run at Cat5?  Clarifying.
