This diagnostic utility doesn't show what the other WiFi neighbors are using...there any display for that possibly? InSSIDer shows what neighbors are using for channels. Can you post what InSSIDer results in?

One thing you can do to add 5Ghz to your 655, install a DAP model wireless AP from D-Link and migrate some of your devices that support 5Ghz...At some point.

You need to isolate the router from all 2.4ghz signals as best as possible while testing. Even if you can fully disable the ISP Modems WiFi fully for a while. This will be a big issue if the modem still broadcasts 2.4Ghz. Technically you should be able to if you set it on channel 1 and the DIR-655 on 11, however you maybe dealing with additional neighboring WiFi as well.

Here's a screenshot of Apple's Wireless Diagnostics tool.  It's summary says:

Crowded Channel, says channel 11 is crowded and I should set the router to automatic channel (which I was doing initially), or use 5GHz band, which the DIR 655 doesn't support.

Strangely, the screenshot summary says current channel is 6, but it's 11.

Hmm, that link you attached is a post describing an issue with DVRs and the IPTV service behind an AT&T U-verse modem.  I can ping my Pace modem's IP and configure it via the web interface.  I don't have the IPTV service with U-verse, or issues with device connectivity.

The channels are shown but the image is truncated by the message board post.  Right click on the image, view image to see it in its entirety (including channels).

Sure, I'd be willing to review settings with a D-Link support rep.

Duh, forgot about that. Ya, 11 is busy and wouldn't want to be on it.

Send me a PM with ID and PW. I can check it out now if you have time. If not give a date and time frame. Please be wired to the router with a PC.

FurryNutz:  Sent you a PM, going to review settings at some point.  I'd appreciate it!

In the meantime, I haven't re-created my settings from scratch after I did a factory reset.  I simply imported the settings from the file.  Does recreating the settings from scratch really make a difference?  Seems to me this if the backup settings file is corrupt, the restore process would break at some point.  Recreating from scratch would be a major pain, as I have network filtering enabled, DHCP reservations on ~20 devices.  Plus the other global settings.

I keep going back to a firmware bug with this issue... even if there's a Wifi interference issue in my case, it shouldn't cause the router to reboot itself.  Perhaps the Wifi client device causing the issue is disconnected and subsequently reconnects to the router.  But a total system shutdown seems to be firmware issue, i.e. the DIR 655 isn't failing gracefully, in software engineering lingo.  Could also be a hardware issue with my router.  Are there any diagnostic tools that I can run on my DIR 655 to verify that it's functioning properly?

Please try a factory reset and then set up from scratch to see if the router keeps rebooting. There maybe a configuration issue or someone connected maybe causing the reboots...Will have to plan a time frame which we can review the router settings.

I've disabled the QoS engine as recommended here http://superuser.com/questions/804545/d-link-dir-655-router-rebooting-itself-randomly and my DIR 655 has been up for over a week now (knock on wood)!  This is the longest I've gone with a reboot since I started monitoring it several weeks ago.

  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
Seems like the ISP may not be bridged? If so, QoS could have issues with a ISP modem/router combination. QoS works with out any issues if connected to a stand alone ISP modem...

Sounds like you found the fix for your configuration.  ;)

Of course as soon as I posted "it's resolved!" the router would reboot.  I'm glad that it at least managed to stay running for a bit over a week (right at 8 days) since the last reboot.

With this new data point, what are the likely culprits?  Still think it's signal interference?

One way to find out would be to disable the 655s radio. Enable the Wifi radio on the ISP modem and test...Just run the 655 with out any wireless and see if wired connections remain and the router doesn't reboot...
